I was remembering the 1950's and 60's, when the Water and Land
World Records were always in the news, and there were some
tragic accidents. To attempt the manned water speed record is
said to be the most dangerous job in the world, and I can
believe it. Back then we were also seeing fatalities in Formula
One every year. Seems to me that trying to set a new record with
an unmanned boat is perfectly suited to the sensibilities of the
21st century, where health and safety rules are often overdone.
It may be that the testing for this new project may cost a lot
of boats, but at least it won't cost someone their life. Good
luck to everyone involved in the project, you've made a great
       start!

I was doing some research for an article on the causes of
vehicle accidents recently, and it became clear that human error
is by far the most common reason for crashes on land, sea and in
the air. For example, over 90% of car accidents are caused by
carelessness, negligence or recklessness on the part of their
too-casual drivers. Airliners are only flown by trained,
qualified and experienced professionals, but the main cause of
their (thankfully rare) accidents is still mistakes by flight
crews. Most fatalities at sea are primarily caused by people,
not boats or ships. So the current project to build a fast water
craft is very interesting because it takes potential mistakes by
an on-board pilot out of the equation, and aims to replace them
with a machine that can react far more quickly, appropriately
and unemotionally than we humans are capable of.

In Formula 1 the cars are usually developed by using 60% sized
shapes in a wind tunnel. So I suppose that it's possible to
'scale up' those results so they are relevant to a full-size
car, or a boat, as least as far as aerodynamics is concerned.
But I don't know if that's possible with water. In any case, I
imagine that the critical issue at high speed on water is not
just aerodynamic and hydrodynamic stability, but also that every
ripple is a potential hazard. And although there are 'wave
tanks' available, often used to predict tsunami effects, none
seem large enough for high speed boat testing. So the idea of
full-scale testing of prototypes at steadily increasing
velocities could well be the only solution, albeit a very
time-consuming and costly exercise for the team. Their
incremental approach certainly sounds like the right strategy.

I like the idea that we're able to follow this design process
right from the start. Thank you Jacqui for making this happen!

If the development team have any difficulties in arranging a
test area at least 13 miles long in the UK, I'm sure my
Florida home would be only too pleased to offer a facility. With
many relatively flat areas in Florida, and natural and
artificial watercourses everywhere, it would find a good TV
audience and get support from the local authorities, I'm sure.
Other states such as Louisiana and around the Gulf of Mexico
might also provide useful venues. Could be great, guys!

Those solid fuel rockets that are used by hobbyists in the USA
are insanely fast! I think there was a TV documentary a few
years back featuring Kari Byron (from Mythbusters) that showed
the acceleration and distance these rockets can achieve
vertically. On a horizontal water surface, on a hydroplane with
minimal water drag, who knows what speeds are possible? I guess
you could try to work this out in theory, but what might be
achievable in real life? I want to be there in 2021 to see!

Using Artificial Intelligence in this way is a great idea. I've
seen a couple of 'driverless cars' in my area recently and they
were moving around in ways that looked much safer than most
drivers I know! If the AI can 'learn' from runs at ever
increasing speeds, this could be a very successful project. Even
if one of the test runs ends in a crash, the offboard data
should help the team to learn useful lessons. And they'll be
able to take as much time as they need to do that. I'm reminded
of when Jules Bianchi died after crashing his Formula 1 car in
the rain in the Japanese Grand Prix a couple of years ago: the
computer analysis afterwards was amazingly detailed and has been
used to make the sport safer

The team are situated in a perfect part of the world for this
project. Cambridge is the 'Silicon Valley' of the UK, with some
of the best AI people in the world working and doing research
there. Northamptonshire is where most of the Formula One teams
are based, with their expertise in composites, wind tunnel work
and very sophisticated data communication systems. And London is
the place to do deals and network with media people. It's a
       recipe for success!
