Why We Love Comics. The Batman.

There's alot to bitch about with comics today. Cough, cough, new
52. blah, blah. However there was a good 60+ year period of
comics we LOVED. Sure, there was stuff to hate too. But there's
a reason we're all here. At one time or another we loved comics.
So I thought it'd be good to start some positive threads about
the stuff we liked. Why we got into them. And discuss characters
we actually give a damn about.
So to start it off I figure we can talk about one character I'd
wager alot of us really like. Our dearly departed friend Batman.
(because in my mind, new 52 killed them all)
For me my first exposure to Bruce Wayne was the Adam West tv
show when I was 5. Adam West IS and always be my Batman. And I
still think the show is great for all it's goofiness.

Probably got into the comics when I was around 10. This isn't my
first issue, but it's a cover that springs to mind when I think
of Batman. I love me some Doug Moench Batman. His run was my
first real exposure to the Batman comic universe and I even like
Kelley Jones' weird moody pencils on the title. I miss the
episodic adventures of Batman when he'd go from fighting
Two-Face to Firefly to even that schmuck Cornelius Stirk from
month to month. Batman Inc. can shove it. These were the good
times imo.

My favorite all-time Batman story though? Isn't even really a
Batman story per se. It's the Riddler story from this issue of
Secret Origins which is strangely written by Neil Gaiman. A
writer I don't even like. But ah well, this one story to me
summed up most of the reasons I liked Batman as a kid until
today.

Like Batman? Hate Batman? Have some favorite issues to talk
about? Let's hear it.

Love Batman, starting with Adam West. Used to read all the
World's Finest stuff back in the 60's, 70's. Keaton's Batman was
kind of boring to me - the whole Dark Knight was too far off
from Adam West for me. But the 90's cartoons and JLU got me
liking the character again. The Court of Owls stuff is excellent
and maybe some of my favorite stuff to date. I like it when
Batman has a real challenge. Most of his normal adversaries
don't really give him that - except for Rhas.

For sure 60's Batman , and yes Adam West and Burt Ward , as a
kid I had no problem enjoying those shows.
but comics for me , with Batman and Robin , The Teen Titans ,
artists like Neal Adams , how could you not love Batman...

These characters were also written well , look at the 60's camp
as a beginning , with human flaws and egos , to real characters
who dwelled on their mistakes , watch Batman develop to the
point of perfection , to being the best , period , that how
determined he was in everything he did , I grew up reading that
, watching that.
I grew up as Dick Grayson grew up , saw the reality in some of
those stories without even knowing it , themes most 7 year olds
really don't comprehend , and changes in the characters over the
decades reflect the changes in the world , things we don't
necessarily like , but understand.
I even look back on how when I read the really old comics of
Batman , reprints and such signs of the times, and Batman was
always the smartest guy in the room....

Loved Batman as a kid, but loved Robin more. When I played
superhero I always had to have that yellow towel tied around my
neck. I discovered Batman not through comics but through
cartoons. The Superfriends to be exact. But when I learned to
read it was comics that taught me. Followed Batman, JLA, Teen
Titans and any other book my friends or family would give me.
Really glad most stories were self contained back then cause I
rarely had consecutive issues. Once I got a job and started
making my own money it was on then. Started filling in missing
back issues. Superheroes have been a constant in my life from
the beginning. Praying DC will come to their senses soon and I
can jump back in, but untill they do make mine marvel.
