The History of the Wizards of High Sorcery
Origins: In the Age of Dreams, before the stars were firmly
fixed in the heavens, the gods of magic walked on Krynn.
Solinari the White, Lunitari the Red, and Nuitari the Black were
there. They each held a love for magic, for the new world of
Krynn, and for the spirit beings called stars.
High Sorcery is Born
Three thousand years ago, during the Second Dragon War, when the
First Born Five dragons ravaged the land, The Three Mages
Corenthas, Eriane, and Shaud, summoned potent magic and
commanded the elements to swallow these Evil wyrms forever. The
spell defeated the dragons, but the mages were unleashed. The
spell ran wild. Thousands died in the earthquakes, storms, fire,
and floods that raged for months.
Fearing for their lives, the mages retreated to a tower and
called upon the gods of magic - Solinari, Lunitari, and Nuitari
- for aid. The gods heard their pleas. They seized the tower and
moved it to a place beyond the world where they could teach the
three mages a new magical art: High Sorcery. The gods of magic
then clouded the minds of other mortals, so the wild mages left
after the war could escape into the wilderness. For a century,
the gods tutored their three disciples in the ways of High
Sorcery.
was held by all the gods, which led to the All-Saints' War. The
three gods of magic did not join in the battles, choosing
instead to orbit the planet. But their eyes and hearts were ever
attentive to the fate of the stars. During the long war, each
god took occasion to walk Ansalon in search of one mortal
follower. They each found such a creature and bestowed on it the
keys to the Lost Citadel- an amazing place of magic beyond the
circles of the universe. Taking their disciples to the Lost
Citadel, the gods taught them the three Foundations of Wizardry:
1) All wizards are brothers in their order. All orders are
brothers in power.
2) The places of High Wizardry are held in common among all the
orders, and no sorcery is to be used there in anger against
fellow
wizards.
3) The world beyond the walls of the towers may bring brother
against brother and order against the order, but such is the way
of the
universe.
This arcane power, much more controllable than the wild magic
that came before, was a powerful way for spellcasters to harness
Krynn's primordial magic. The mages ultimately mastered this new
magical art and became the first wizards of High Sorcery. They
returned to Krynn at the gods' command to lead other wild mages
out of hiding and to teach them the new magical art. To this
end, the wizards formed the three Orders of High Sorcery to
train, protect, and govern wizards.
Returning their apprentices to Krynn, the gods of magic
established the three Orders of High Sorcery: Each order
dedicated itself to one of the three gods and to the magic that
god had bestowed upon the world. The Order of the White Robes
followed Solinari, the god of good, who held dominion over quiet
and constructive magic. The Order of the Red Robes pledged
itself to Lunitari, the goddess of Neutrality, whose domain was
illusion and reshaping magic. The Order of the Black Robes
followed Nuitari, the god of Evil, who held dominion over
commanding and destructive magic.
The Three gathered twenty-one wild mages together and taught
them what they had learned from the Gods of Magic. These
twenty-one mages became known as the Favored Ones and went on to
teach others of their newfound magic. They formed what is now
known as the Orders of High Sorcery.
The Three were then given seven Stone of Threes, which they
entrusted to the new mages. With these stones, five Towers of
High Sorcery were constructed across Ansalon as places to teach
and to be a safe haven for all magic-users.
Kistilan's Betrayal
One of the Favored Ones, named Kistilan, grew jealous of The
Three. He turned the gifts they had given him against his tutors
and took the knowledge of the gods as he killed them. betrayed
by one of their own. Kistilan killed nineteen of them until
Megistal killed him at the end of the Wizards' War.
Initially, the Orders of Sorcery were loosely knit groups of
wizards. As war with the dragons grew inevitable, the Masters of
each order assembled at the Lost Citadel to proclaim the unity
of the orders. The forgotten lore of Krynn tells us that the
three elves gathered by the brothers of Magic were Parys Dayl of
the White, Fayal Padran of the Red, and Kayn Wytsnal of the
Black.
Since that time, all Wizards of High Sorcery vow first loyalty
to magic and its continued existence on Ansalon. This loyalty
lets magic flourish despite attempts to eliminate it. After this
primary loyalty, wizards have loyalty to their orders. A White
Robe and a Black Robe wizard, fighting in opposing armies, do
everything necessary to destroy each other. If the wizards met
on neutral ground, however, they would most likely compare notes
and discuss magical matters. If an outside force were
threatening the destruction of magic, the wizards would band
together to stop it.
Once the three wizards had returned to Krynn, the gods of magic
closed the way to the original tower so no ordinary mortal or
wizard could learn the secrets it harbored. This tower became
known as the Lost Citadel.
Later, during the Fourth Age, at least two wizards, the former
head of the Red Robes, Belize, and the renegade wizard Lyim
Rhistadt, attempted to locate and enter the Lost Citadel so that
they, too, could learn secrets from the gods of magic. Both
attempts failed, however, and the Lost Citadel was completely
cut off from Krynn when the gods departed after the Chaos War.
It might even have been destroyed - no mortal knows for sure.
