Fourthmonth, 427 AC
The Dead of Night,
Great storm clouds flash and thunder crashes as it begins to
pour sheets of rain over the rooftops of the proceedings of the
Grand Circle, which has been in power since Grand Master Liam
Ehrling died at Castle uth Winston is at an impasse. While there
is clear support for Goddard Tasgall becoming the next head of
the order, the Grand Circle cannot elect him since he has
refused to leave Sanction. It truly has been an uncanny
situation, and they cannot understand what he is doing. At the
expiration of the five-minute break, the other council members
realize there might be a problem, as they are the only ones in
the chambers.
The Clock ticks….

The white wizard Master Coryn Brinefellow is scrying on the
proceedings at Castle uth Winston, and is troubled by what some
are suggesting, side-stepping Goddard Tasgall altogether, and
voting for someone from within. She is getting strange vibes
from some of these figures. She does not know how to liken it to
anything, except…her own encounters with those that serve the
Lord of Lies. That can’t be it. A fear grows inside her that the
Lord of Lies may be trying to tip the scales

The Lord Marshall’s accommodations in the Lord City
Coryn travels the pathways of Magic into Jaymes Markam the new
Lord Marshall of Solamnia’s bedroom. He is at his reading desk,
and he looks up and sees the concern on Coryn’s brow. He listens
to her for the next five minutes. Then he is up, and he has his
staff assemble. He wakes the household. Jaymes turns to Coryn
and tells her she has her choice.
He will go to Sanction and convince Goddard Tasgall to go to
Sancrist for the vote. “Here’s the part where it is your choice.
I go with you to Sancrist with Tasgall and know that they are
going to want to jail me for shadow charges. If they do that,
you are going to have to bring my…wife… to Castle uth Winston to
get me out with her testimony.
Coryn asks, “Are you sure you want to play that card, we can
find some other way.”
Jaymes Markam considers Coryn’s words and weighs the chances
that his wife’s testimony would not be enough.
Coryn takes the Lord Marshall’s silence that he is ruminating on
the question she posed. “So, what is my other option?

Thunder crashes, rattling the glassware. The vote whip, Sir
Cedric Steelwind, hurries until he finds who he is looking for.
Sir Elric Thorne sees the whip’s panicked state when he comes
into the room. "Where is everyone? We have to vote tonight."
It does not please Sir Elric to tell him, “We cannot, there is
no longer a plurality of council members present to force a
vote."
Never mind that they were using some archaic mechanisms to force
a vote for one of their own. Sir Cedric Steelwind tells Sir
Elric Thorne to call out the watch to find these derelict
council members.

White Robed Master Coryn and an incognito cloaked Jaymes Markam
appear at the Port of Sanction. They look around for landmarks
to get their bearings. The Harbor Lighthouse, the Clock Tower,
alright. There's the Temple of Duerghast coming through in the
mist.
They pass the looming ruin of the Temple of Luerkhisis, and they
cross over the bridge; the dull orange lava flow captures the
Lord Marshall’s attention as he follows its snaking path through
the city. His eyes follow the flow to its source high above, the
Lords of Doom. They made their way toward where the Solamnic
Knights were rumored to be located. They are found by the Circle
of Knights, and after some truth testing, the Lord Marshall and
the White Witch are meeting with Goddard Tasgall.
Throughout the meeting, Tasgall utters several vulgar epithets
for the entire council. Jaymes is waiting for some indication
that Tasgall gets what is going on. “You can’t stay here any
longer, you have to go to Castle uth Winston for the vote, right
now. They are going to vote right now. Don’t you understand?
There is no tomorrow. You must step up today, right now, and
take control. I believe in you, am I wrong?
Goddard Tasgall is asking himself that at this very moment…

The pouring rain continues to come down as the castle watch has
been turned out to search for the missing council members, and
they fan out to conduct a systematic search of the castle and
its grounds. Some stragglers are picked up and taken back to
the council chambers; the rest are proving to be more elusive,
as teams are coming back empty-handed. They head to the Temples
for assistance. The knocking at the Temple Door brings a very
put-out caretaker to the door, and he opens it to find out who
the hell is banging on his door at this godforsaken hour. The
Castle Watch Captain clears his throat and begins his
explanation. he tries to deliver concisely and stays completely
to the point. The door slams shut, leaving the Castle watch
Captain to wonder if he should wait or take that as a no.

Lord Marshall Jaymes Markam sees what he thinks is hesitation
from the only man that Jaymes thought he could build tomorrow
side by side with. The Lord Marshall grabs Goddard respectively
and tells him, “Hesitation will get you killed. You are not
seeking out power; it is being thrust upon you. Some men are
threatening to take control of the future of the Knighthood.
They have a divergent path, apparently, from the rest of us.
They are cloistered out there on that Rock, telling themselves
and each other how good they are. They are going to anoint
someone else and pass you over because you refuse to leave your
post here, at the gates to hell. Listen, Sir, you have to reach
and take this; I cannot do it for you. Call your people you
trust with your life and tell them to suit up as your
entourage.”
Goddard Tasgall looks up at the Lord Marshall, and finally,
Jaymes sees the fire and steel build within Tasgall as he
launches off, calling the names of the ones he trusts with his
life.
Jaymes looks over at Coryn, and they look at each other, and
they both exhale and breathe again, hoping they are doing the
right thing. Coryn had been watching the entire scene play out
and thought Jaymes did remarkably well. We have a lot riding on
his ascension.

The storm continues to rattle the windows of the chambers of the
High Circle.
The bloc of ultra-conservatives that are in the council chamber
is going through their list of candidates that must be elected
tonight once they get a quorum.
The Slayer of the Red Dragon of Sancrist, Sir Michel Cataya,
Knight of the Rose, was born on the isle of Sancrist and has
never traveled to the mainland of Solamnia. It said that he was
free of the corruption that plagued the knighthood there. He has
a good story, and he would be decisive in the job.
Some of the stragglers had been brought back and were cuffed to
their chairs so they could not leave again, even if they wanted
to. They hear the name Michel Cataya and think the exact
opposite. They think to themselves, yeah, if you want another
kingpriest to be inflicted on the world. He drips
self-righteousness. Tell someone that they are pure and everyone
is not, tell me how that is not going to turn out badly. They
watch in horror as his name is put forth for consideration.
They ask what they are doing. You do not have a quorum. They
don’t have a plurality.
Just then, a lightning strike strikes so near that it causes
everyone to jump out of their skins.
Elsewhere in the search for the truant council members of the
Grand Circle on the Castle uth Winston Grounds
Outside in the storm, against the strong sideways winds, the
watch braves through lightning strikes to find these missing
council members. The Caretaker at the Temple finally told them
to see the Mages. So, they are looking for the Auxiliary.
