Highmage of High Sorcery
Article written by Kranar Drogin
The position of Highmage is elected among the 21 members of the
council of the Orders of High Sorcery by a majority vote. Race,
sex, and even the color of your robes don't matter when a
Highmage is up for election. Time has shown, though, that
usually a Red Robed Wizard is the wizard who is elected to the
position. When elected, said wizard will run the Tower of High
Sorcery Wayreth and have powers almost unmatched, including
being able to send someone back in time.
Past Highmages
Corenthas (2645 - ? PC) He was one of the wizards who introduced
High Sorcery to Krynn & the first Highmage. Stepped down from
Highmage because he never got over the deaths of Eriane or
Shaud. White Robe Wizard
Kharro the Red (? PC) became Highmage after Corenthas stepped
down. Magic flourished under him, and he ordered the building of
4 more Towers of High Sorcery. He never lived to see the
completion of any of these towers. Died of a stroke three days
before his fiftieth Life-Day. Red Robe Wizard
Gadrella of Tarsis (? PC) became Highmage after Kharro died of a
stroke. The first woman and the first Black Robe as Highmage.
Zindreth of Micah (2424 - 2414 PC), A Red Robe Wizard who
oversaw the raising of the Tower of Daltigoth ten years before
he also headed up the raising of Palanthas. He was poisoned the
day before he rose the Tower of Palanthas, and in his final act,
cast the spell to raise that tower. Died after the spell was
cast. It was found that he misspoke the words to the spell and
actually labeled the Tower - the Doom Spire.
Usk (2414 - ? PC), a Black Robe Wizard who came to power, was
the one to find out that Zindreth had misspoken the spell to
raise the Tower of Palanthas. He raised Shoikan Grove.
Kistilan (2596 PC) was taught magic at the feet of the scions
with twenty others. He then killed the other nineteen except
Megistal, later took control of the wizards of Ansalon, and led
an assault against the dwarves of Thorbardin. Many wizards and
dwarves died, and he was later killed by Megistal. Was a Black
Robe Wizard.
Megistal (2596 - ? PC) took over, leading the wizards of Ansalon
after killing Kistilan. He was also taught magic at the feet of
the scions with 20 others, and was a Red Robe Wizard.
Orrista of Solanthus (? - 2296 PC). She is the one who
established the Inner Circle of the Conclave and expanded the
Conclave to five members from each of the colored robes, one
from every Tower. A Red Robe
Lemorras the Grim (2296 - ? PC) Lemorras became the next
Highmage after Orrista of Solanthus, and was the first Black
Robe in nearly three hundred years to be the Highmage.
Moranda of Crowford (1660 - 1640 ca. PC). First was the Master
of the Tower at Losarcum, then two years after that, became
Highmage for 20 years. She was a Black Robe Wizard
Vestia (ca. 418 PC), Highmage who closed down Zhaman due to the
land of Ansalon no longer needing much to do with mages. Was a
White Robe Wizard
Yulin the Dour (? PC) was in power during the Eve of Hammers and
Flame, and was going to attack both Solamnia and Istar that
night, but didn't when the Solamnics brought the heads of the
murderers to him. A Red Robe Wizard
Vincil da Jevra (26 - 20 PC) Vincil created several new cantrip
spells that became essential teachings of apprentices. He went
on to create over two hundred new spells and many magical
Artifacts. In 41 PC, when he was forty-one, he became the Master
of the Tower of Daltigoth and was the youngest in history to
achieve the role. Vincil da Jevra was Highmage during the time
of the Kingpriest's war on wizards. He was killed when Sir Marto
put an axe into his back, and Jorelia took over. After his
death, the Lost Battles began. Jorelia led the magical ceremony
to dispose of his body back at Wayreth. Vincil da Jevra was a
Red Robe Wizard
Jorelia the Enchantress (20 PC) took over as head of the
Conclave upon Vincil's death. She later died about two weeks
after the loss of the Daltigoth and Losarcum Towers. Jorelia was
a White Robe Wizard.
Merroc (20 - 1 PC) A White Robe Wizard who takes over after
Jorelia's death. After the Lost Battles, as the new Highmage
Merroc was handing over the Tower of High Sorcery at Palanthas
gate key to Lord of Palanthas Urian, Andras Rannoch appeared in
one of the highest windows of the tower. He told the crowd that
no one could enter until the Master of Past and Present
returned. Andras then threw himself from the window and, with
his dying breath, cursed the tower. The tower then changed into
a dark version of what it was.
Astathan of Qualinost (? AC). Became Highmage in the years
Shadow Years after the Cataclysm. Astathan brought order back to
Wizards of High Sorcery in the wake of the destruction of their
most bitter of enemies, the Church of Istar and their Divine
Hammer. Astathan is credited with setting up schools for
teaching magic all over Ansalon. He is regarded as one of the
greatest Highmages in the Orders' history, even by Black Robes
of High Sorcery. By the time of his death, Wayreth went from
being a place of despair to a bustling place of activity.
Astathan was a White Robe Wizard.
Par-Salian (ca. 323 - 356 AC) was a powerful white-robed mage
who served as the longest-standing Master of the Conclave during
the Age of Despair. As well as ruling the entire Conclave,
Par-Salian was also the head of the White Robes and the most
powerful mage in the Conclave at the time. He was only surpassed
in magical might by the likes of Raistlin Majere during his
lifetime. Shortly after the War of the Lance, Par-Salian
appeared as a frail and elderly man in his seventies. Par-Salian
preferred studying in solitude rather than dealing with the
daily running of the Conclave. He dwelt in the Tower of Wayreth,
and by the War of the Lance, he would not even leave the tower
under any circumstances. Retired after sending Caramon and
Tasslehoff back in time. A White Robe Wizard.
Justarius (356 - 381 AC) Justarius chose to take the Test of
High Sorcery; his skills were pushed to their limits, and his
left leg was savaged by spectral foes, which left it crippled.
Justarius was finally forced to make the choice between physical
prowess and magic. He became Highmage after Par-Salian stepped
down. Justarius is recognized as one of the most powerful and
influential mages during the Age of Despair. Justarius long held
the title of the Master of the Red Robes and ultimately rose to
the position of Highmage. Known to be wise and open in his
dealings with people, Justarius was highly regarded by most
mages during his day, including those in both the black and
white-robed orders. Justarius sired a daughter named Jenna, who
grew up in Palanthas and became a powerful mage of the red robes
in her own right. Justarius led the Conclave on an assault on
Storm's Keep and was killed in the battle there. Justarius was a
Red Robe Wizard
Dalamar Argent (381 - 384 AC) Dalamar is one of the most
powerful wizards on Ansalon. Once considered a true Silvanesti
Elf, he was branded a Dark Elf for his pursuit of forbidden
magic. Dalamar learned from the infamous Raistlin Majere. After
Justarius died, for a brief time, Dalamar became Head of the
Conclave. During SummerFlame, the Chaos War broke out, and he
was badly injured in the final battle. After Magic disappears,
He goes into hiding, and the Tower of Palanthas vanishes one
night. Slain by Mina during the War of Souls, Dalamar was
restored to life and continues to serve the Orders of High
Sorcery. Black Robe Wizard
Palin Majere (384 - 421 AC) was the third child of Caramon
Majere and Tika Waylan Majere. He had a talent for magic. This
talent frightened his father, who tried his best to dissuade his
son from following Palin's uncle, Raistlin Majere's path. At the
conclusion of the Chaos War, Palin entered the Abyss with a
group that planned on assaulting and killing Chaos. During the
Battle of the Rift, Palin helped Tasslehoff, Usha, and Dougan
Redhammer capture a drop of Chaos' blood. To allow the group to
succeed, Palin casts Magius's Light of Truth, which helped
banish Chaos. Palin was the first mage to successfully cast this
spell and was considered by many to be a powerful mage. During
this time, Palin is deeply upset with the loss of magic, even
though he has become the head of the White Robes in 390 AC. In
403 AC, He became the head of the Wizard's Conclave and
disbanded the group, feeling that without magic, the wizards
were powerless.
Current Highmage
Jenna (422 - Current AC) When High Sorcery returned to Krynn,
she was chosen as the next Highmage. Highmage Jenna is a Red
Robe
