Imperial Army
Empress Zeva the Greysword
Governor General Hjortarian
Regular Army:
41 men per platoon (commanded by Lieutenant)
4 platoons per company (commanded by Captain)
4 companies per battalion (commanded by Major)
4 battalions per brigade (commanded by Lt. Colonel)
4 brigades per regiment (commanded by Colonel)
3 regiments per division (commanded by Lt. General)
3 divisions per corps (commanded by Maj. General)
2 corps per army (commanded by Col. General)
3 armies total
Reserve Army follows the same basic structure, forming a total
of 3 corps (infantry/militia) in aggregate, each attached to one
specific Regular Army group as a round-out unit. Reserve units
are typically comprised of soldiers who have completed their
mandatory enlistment and have chosen to remain "on call" for a
period of 3 years in return for a reduced stipend, as well as
selected town militia units who have met the readiness
requirements outlined by the General Staff. Reserve line
officers (lieutenants and captains) are drawn from the Imperial
Military Academy at Soreel during their 3rd year of instruction,
with higher officers drawn from various sources, including
Academy instructors, recent graduates, and other Regular Army
officers between billets.

1st Air Force Regiment
The pride of General Hjortarian’s Air Force. These 3000
soldiers are the best, of the best, of the best. (Sir!) They are
the elite, and the Commanding General always flies with the 1st
regiment.
Consists of 5000 personnel, broken down as follows: Five
Squadrons, each 1000 strong, coded as Call Names. Each Squadron
consists of five Troops coded by Bird of Prey, each 200 strong.
Each Troop comprises of five Wings, each 40 strong, coded by
metal. Thus, a given soldier from the 1st regiment, when asked
his designation, might say “Point, Sky Raiders, Eagle Gold
Wing.” As will be seen in the breakdown below:
Sky Raiders (1000)
Hawk (200)
Gold (40)
Silver
Copper
Iron
Steel
Eagle (200)
Gold (40)
Silver
Copper
Iron
Steel
Falcon (200)
Gold (40)
Silver
Copper
Iron
Steel
Raven (200)
Gold (40)
Silver
Copper
Iron
Steel
Owl (200)
Gold (40)
Silver
Copper
Iron
Steel
Just so I don’t waste unnecessary space, the Troop and Wing
designations are standard throughout each Squadron. Instead, I
will simply list the remaining four Squadrons:
Sky Raiders
Wind Striders
Star Runners
Night Stalkers
Special Air Forces
Ptarron (TAR-on)
Hit Dice: 8d8
Initiative: +2 (+4)
Speed: 12 (50)
AC: 4 (-2)
Attacks: Bite (once per round, 4d6), Claw rake (two per round,
must be same target, 4d4 per claw)
Special Attacks: Sonic scream. Short range, cone projection.
Cone length: 20 feet. Does 3d6 concussive damage, subject must
save vs. Breath weapons or be deafened for 1d4 rounds.
Special Qualities: Natural flight, sense others by heat (as a
snake)
Saves: As 10th-level warrior
Abilities: Str: 26 Int: 10 Dex: 20 Con: 21
Climate/Terrain: Jungle/Wetlands/Swamp
Originization: Semi-domesticated flights
Alignment: neutral
Ptarron are huge, winged reptilian creatures, 30 feet from nose
to tail and a 35 wingspan. They resemble Pterodactyls, but
their beaks are much shorter, more curved like an eagle. They
are the primary mount of the 1st Airborne.
Standard flight crew of two, a pilot and a weapons officer.
Double saddle rig includes two sets of saddle bags, one
immediately in front of the Weapons officer, and one just
behind. The rear saddle bags hold supplies for the two riders,
the front contains a variety of projectile weapons; typically
rocks, lead shot for slings, ceramic pots of oil, and glass
flasks of Greek fire.

Wolverine Dwarven Warwagon
By: Dungeon Master Date: February 25, 2024, 10:02 pm
---------------------------------------------------------
Wolverine Dwarven Warwagon
Dwarven Warwagon: Created by Dougan Granitehammer, these sturdy
vehicles are the backbone of the Wolverines' heavy divisions.
Essentially a medium ballista mounted on a high-sided wagon,
they carry a crew of 3 soldiers (2 ballista crewmen and one
driver). The high sides of the wagon protect the crewmen from
missile fire, with vision slits provided for aiming and driving
purposes. Each crewmember is armored in chain mail and carries a
crossbow and short sword for dismounted combat. The warwagon is
drawn by 2 heavily barded horses (warponies in the dwarven
units), giving it a respectable movement rate compared to
infantry. The ballista has a radius of fire of 180 degrees, and
can be elevated 45 degrees, giving the warwagon a wide field of
fire in combat. The warwagon's ballista can be aimed at units in
formation as well as vehicles and buildings, and can be fired
once every 2 rounds with a range of 3000 yards for 3d6 damage.
The Heavy Warwagon substitutes a heavy ballista for the medium,
and has a crew of five. Its rate of fire is one shot per four
rounds, with a range of 1000 yards and 3d10 damage. Rumors of a
self-propelled, steam-driven warwagon are currently
unsubstantiated.

The Imperial Military Academy of Soreel
By: Dungeon Master Date: March 2, 2024, 5:40 pm
---------------------------------------------------------
The Imperial Military Academy
The Imperial Military Academy of Soreel was founded by General
Zeva early in her reign. The Imperial Military Academy is the
primary training center for all officers in the Imperial Army of
the Wolverines. Located in the city of Daria, on Soreel, the
Academy is home to over 2000 cadets and faculty. The course of
study is three years, with graduates being promoted to the rank
of Lieutenant. Fields of study available at the Academy include
swordsmanship, archery, armored vehicle operation, artillery,
horsemanship, aerial combat, field communications, logistics,
engineering, intelligence, and leadership theories. However, the
Academy does not only teach war-fighting skills. Each new
officer comes away from the Academy with an education on par
with that obtained from the finest centers of learning in the
Empire. Cadets at the Academy are selected from among the
enlisted ranks each year. Potential cadets are approached by
their superior officers and given the opportunity to attend the
Academy and become officers in the army, with all the privileges
and responsibilities such a position entails. Typically, only
about one-third of those approached will go on to attend the
Academy, with the rest continuing their enlistment to its full
term. No stigma is attached to declining an invitation to the
Academy, as it is understood that not all soldiers wish to be
officers, and not everyone in the army wishes to make a career
of it.
The first year of instruction typically consists of basic
leadership skills, instruction in reading and writing, advanced
weapon techniques, and instruction in the command structure of
the army. In the second year, cadets are encouraged to begin
thinking about what military specialty they wish to pursue while
receiving instruction in history, philosophy, military science,
mathematics, and languages. The first half of the third year is
spent in specialty-specific instruction, while the second half
of the year is spent in the field with a reserve unit
specializing in the cadets' field of choice. By the time the
cadet has graduated as an officer, he or she is a well-rounded,
well-educated, and highly-trained leader. The General Staff
chooses instructors at the Academy from the ranks of active-duty
officers. To be chosen as an instructor is considered a great
honor, and few officers turn down an appointment. Many officers
consider a tour of duty as an Academy instructor to be a key
step to further promotion in the chain of command. Instructors
at the Academy are considered to be the foremost experts in
their field of operations. A tour as an instructor is generally
three years, although some officers opt for additional tours.
The commanding officer of the Academy is a Colonel General and a
member of the General Staff. The commandant is selected by
General Zeva herself and serves in the position until he or she
retires, is promoted, or is replaced. The commandant's primary
responsibility is supervising the instruction of new officers
and meeting weekly with the faculty to review their progress.
The commandant reports directly to the Marshall of the Army and
attends all meetings of the General Staff. Officers in the
Imperial Army do not have a specific term of service; they serve
in good behavior until they retire or resign their commissions.
Promotions become more and more competitive the farther up the
chain of command one goes, as there are fewer positions
available to fill. Promotions up to Major are made on the
recommendation of the Brigade Promotion Board, while promotions
up to Lt. General are made on the recommendation of the Corps
Promotion Board. Further promotions are made on the
recommendation of the General Staff.

The Special Warfare and Intelligence Center of Arun
By: Dungeon Master Date: March 2, 2024, 5:42 pm
---------------------------------------------------------
The Special Warfare and Intelligence Center of Arun

In the twenty-first year of her reign, Empress Zeva realized
that the security of her realm would rely on timely and accurate
information and intelligence about any threats that might cause
disorder and rebellion. So, it was decided that a separate organ
of the military would be established to provide professional
training for spies and other information gatherers in the realm.
Initially overseen by Marshal Zeke Dargon, the Special Warfare
and Intelligence Center was established in a remote area of the
Arun desert on Soreel. As the name suggests, the Center
specializes in two distinct areas.
• Special warfare covers training in unconventional tactics:
guerilla warfare, counterinsurgency, hostage rescue, and
kidnapping of important enemy figures.
• Intelligence covers information gathering, retrieval of vital
documents and/or equipment from the enemy, sabotage, and
assassination of enemy leaders. Because many of the types of
missions carried out by each division overlap, it was decided to
establish one center to train both types of operatives.
Operatives in the Special Warfare division at the Center are
drawn from active-duty soldiers and officers in the Wolverine
ranks who show an aptitude for independent thought while still
remaining a team player. Candidates are chosen primarily from
the pool of Master Sergeants and Captains, to ensure the level
of experience and education needed to function in the division.
Potential candidates are screened by the Center's selection
committee and approached with the offer to enter the Special
Warfare Training Center for selection trials. These trials
consist of 12 weeks of intense physical and mental challenges
designed to determine the candidate's aptitude for the types of
missions undertaken by the division.
Approximately 20% of the candidates who enter the selection
trials pass and are transferred to the Center. The rest are
returned to their units to serve out the rest of their tours.
Intelligence division operatives are trained in much the same
way as Special Warfare soldiers are, participating in the first
8 weeks of the selection trials. After the physical and mental
training of the trials, the remaining candidates receive an
education at one of the several fine universities in the realm,
concentrating on languages, humanities, and cultural studies of
the many diverse ethnic and national groups found in the Empire.
Candidates receive additional training from the Center while
attending university, learning stealth skills, lock picking,
memorization techniques, armed and unarmed close combat skills,
cryptography, and escape and evasion methods. Those civilians
who fail to pass the rigorous training trials are returned to
their homes and paid a fair sum of money for their time. Agents
of the Center also monitor them closely for signs of betrayal or
treason. Once training is completed, operatives are assigned to
their respective divisions to begin their duties.
Intelligence operatives are sent out to various postings around
the Empire, often with a cover story, and are given specific
missions. These missions may include information gathering,
monitoring those suspected of treason or sedition, recruiting
agents, and other activities deemed vital to Imperial security.
Special Warfare operatives continue to train, participating in
military missions as assigned by Commander, Special Warfare
Division. These missions may take them anywhere in the Empire on
a moment's notice, and so few of these men and women have
families.
Operatives of the Center, for all intents and purposes, cease to
exist in the Empire. All records of their existence in the
outside world are removed to storage at the Center. They are not
permitted to contact family or friends and are discouraged from
forming close relationships with people outside the Center. The
life is harsh, and all of these details are explained to each
candidate before he or she makes the decision to join. Despite
these hardships, the Center does not lack for candidates and
manages to maintain a high level of staffing at all times.
Operatives who retire from the Center are well provided for,
receiving a pension and housing for the remainder of their
lives. Retired operatives may contact their families but are
sworn not to discuss their service for the Center.
They are monitored by the Center and may occasionally be
contacted by an operative for a "Post-Service Interview" as a
way to determine whether the retiree has divulged any sensitive
information. Those who breach their confidentiality are dealt
with harshly and swiftly. As a joint military-civilian post, the
Center has two directors: the Commander, the Special Warfare
Division, is a Colonel General with a seat on the General Staff,
reporting directly to the Greysword herself, and the Minister of
Intelligence is a Council-level minister also reporting directly
to the Empress.
The two directors of the Center typically enjoy a collegial
relationship, with few turf battles occurring over who should
control a particular operation. Outside of the top level of
advisors to the throne, very few people know of the existence of
the Center, although rumors abound in certain locales about
black-clad soldiers swooping in to snatch up a rabble-rouser,
who is never heard from or seen again. All in all, the Center
performs its mission ably and well, providing accurate, timely
information and the ability to act on that information in rapid,
lethal fashion.
