Honorable Mentions
The Stonetellers trilogy (The Rebellion, Death March, Goblin
Nation) occurs sometime after the Dark Knights’ headquarters is
moved back to Neraka, which happens in 425 AC according to the
Knightly Orders of Ansalon roleplaying sourcebook. The
Stonetellers trilogy otherwise references no years or events
that would pinpoint a starting year. For example, there is no
mention of the elves’ attempt to reclaim Qualinesti that was set
up at the end of the Elven Exiles trilogy. This was likely a
deliberate choice made by the respective authors, but I can only
speculate that the Stonetellers events occur just before Elven
Exiles or several years later.
The Taladas trilogy (Blades of the Tiger, Trail of the Black
Wyrm, Shadow of the Flame) begins in spring in Taladas, three
years after the War of Souls, and lasts about a year. Taladas is
in Krynn’s northern hemisphere and on the other side of the
world from Ansalon, so when it is spring on Taladas it is autumn
on Ansalon. Thus, the trilogy begins in autumn 424 AC by
Ansalonian standards.
Explanatory Text
1. Dragons of a Fallen Sun begins with the Great Storm on the
night before Midyear’s Day, and lasts 3-4 weeks depending on
whose point of view you use.
2. Dragons of a Lost Star picks up at the end of Fallen Sun, and
ends with Mina and Goldmoon’s conversation approximately two
weeks later.
3. Dragons of a Vanished Moon begins at the end of Lost Star and
ends in autumn with signs of the coming winter.
4. Night of Blood‘s prologue mentions 35 SC, but even without
that reference, we know the novel occurs before the War of
Souls. Night of Blood spans at least four months, and Hotak’s
edicts (to conscript troops and build ships) take time to bear
fruit. We also know from Tides of Blood that Faros spent months
or years in slavery. Nephera creates an unnatural storm to help
Hotak’s forces, but that is not to be confused with the Great
Storm. There is a discrepancy in Chapter 28, since it is
unlikely for Mina to have sought an alliance with ogres so soon
after leaving the Citadel of Light. (Mina left the Citadel three
years before the War of Souls, or 418 AC, per Dragons of a
Fallen Sun.)
5. Tides of Blood occurs during the War of Souls trilogy as
evidenced by the Silvanesti Shield’s fall, the Silvanesti
invasion, and the loss of Nephera’s power (which syncs the end
of Tides of Blood with the end of Dragons of a Vanished Moon).
6. Ardnor became emperor months ago, and Golgren lost his hand
several months ago, so it is more likely that Empire of Blood
begins in 422 AC than 421 AC.
7. Prisoner of Haven starts before Dragons of a Fallen Sun. The
Great Storm strikes Haven, and Usha & Dezra learn about
Caramon’s death.
8. City of the Lost starts before Dragons of a Fallen Sun.
Splendor is killed during (or within a few days of) the Great
Storm.
9. Flight of the Fallen starts nearly three months after
midsummer and lasts more than a month, yet winter hasn’t reached
the Plains of Dust yet.
10. It is very likely that Return of the Exile ends in winter,
even if only “early winter”. Linsha and Callista return to the
Plains of Dust over a month and a half after Flight of the
Fallen, and multiple events occur after their return that each
last “several days”.
11. Dark Thane is comprised of two parts or books. Book 1 starts
during Dragons of a Lost Star as Qualinost collapses. Book 2
occurs roughly 18 months later, so early 423 AC.
12. Amber and Ashes mention the Spring Dawning festival in Book
2, Chapters 1-2, and Mina states the gods returned to the world
a little over a year ago, which puts Book 2 in the spring of 423
AC.
13. Amber and Iron picks up at the end of Amber and Ashes, but
there are no good markers to indicate when it ends.
14. Amber and Blood is comprised of three parts of books. In
Book 3, Chapter 10, monks are “…awakening the earth after its
winter slumber, making it ready for planting,” which puts the
novel’s end in spring.
15. Key of Destiny provides a suggested starting date for the
adventure.
16. Spectre of Sorrows provides a suggested starting date and
ends with the heroes in another plane. They left Krynn and
entered that plane in spring 422 AC.
17. Price of Courage begins with the heroes returning to Krynn
in summer 422 AC. This roleplaying adventure has an open ending;
however, the Dragons of Krynn roleplaying sourcebook details a
climactic event from Price of Courage as occurring in late
summer.
18. Coryn began hunting in spring after the gods’ return.
Kalrakin and Luthar enter the Tower of Wayreth sometime after
the fall of Qualinost, and late in the novel, it is stated they
have been at the tower for four months and five days.
19. The Lake of Death happens after Dragons of a Lost Star.
There is a slight discrepancy since Ragh thinks Dhamon stopped
being human about a year ago (at the end of the Dhamon trilogy),
but Ragh also admits he does not keep track of time.
20. In the Black Talon, Faros is already emperor of the
minotaurs, and Donnag failed to usurp Golgren at least three
months ago.
21. The Fire Rose timeline is based on three notes. Chapter 1
references summer (though the reference is slightly ambiguous).
Chapter 14 states that Golgren’s hand was cut off at least three
years ago. Finally, the follow-up novel The Gargoyle King starts
three days after The Fire Rose ends and contains two references
to spring.
22. The Gargoyle King starts three days after The Fire Rose and
contains multiple references to spring. The timeline is unclear,
but it is unlikely that The Gargoyle King lasted longer than a
couple of months, even with the final chapter.
23. The prologue of The Lord of the Rose has some discrepancies,
but Chapter 1 clearly starts in the year 42 SC, which is the
same as 425 AC.
24. The Solamnic Army had been fighting Ankhar’s horde for
roughly two years; at least two months passed from the attempted
crossing of the Vingaard River to the end of The Crown and the
Sword.
25. The Measure & the Truth occurs about two years after the
Battle of the Foothills (in The Crown & the Sword). Dram
Feldspar returns home in autumn, and Selinda & Jaymes’s unnamed
child is born the following spring.
26. Sanctuary mentions both 5- and 6-year timeframes, but it
makes the most sense for Sanctuary to start in 426 AC, five
years after the War of Souls.
27. Alliances switch between two locations. They eventually sync
up, but the timeline comes from Khur, where the elves barely
move sixty miles in six months due to constant pressure from
Khurish nomads.
28. Destiny begins ten days after Alliances ends, the elves
explored Inath-Wakenti for at least twenty days, and Faeterus
was working on his spell in the summer. The Epilogue is clear on
when events occur—emissaries arrive before summer ends,
Balifaris is born on the first day of the new year (so 428 AC),
and Kerian leaves for Qualinesti 3 months later.
29. The Secret of Pax Tharkas mentions that Tarn was exiled
about ten years ago, also Tarn’s son Tor (born in Dark Thane) is
ten years old.
30. The Heir of Kayolin occurs a year after the hill dwarves
attacked Pax Tharkas.
31. The Fate of Thorbardin begins shortly after The Heir of
Kayolin ends, and it takes at least a month for the dwarves to
get from Kayolin to the entrance of Thorbardin. It is stated
that Tarn has been exiled for more than twelve years, but “about
twelve years” seems more valid since there’s no convenient place
to add a year to the trilogy, and it would be 435 AC after
twelve years.
