Out in the Borderlands...
By: Callidus Thorn Date: June 5, 2014, 5:00 am

Because I figured another "Game X Discussion thread" would have
been boring ;)
But that's what this is, a place to talk about all things
Borderlands and Borderlands 2.
So, I got the GOTY edition of the game when it came out, I've
got the GOTY of Borderlands too.
I beat the first game with Mordecai, in about the cheesiest
fashion possible where the last boss is concerned. I ran out of
ammo for my sniper rifle so ended spamming the thing to death
with a revolver I'd found with regenerating ammo. Tried the
zombie dlc, but found it rather hostile to snipers, and got
tired of using revolvers for just about everything.
With Borderlands 2 I'm still trying to play sniper, I tried with
Zer0 and kind of failed at it, I tried with Maya and did a
little better, though without the skill Reaper she's no better.
Now I'm going back to Zer0 to try and finally get this game
completed. And then, onto the DLCs, in particular, Tiny Tina's
Assault on Dragon Keep.
Because Tiny Tina is awesome.
And I'm not just saying that because she's crazy and good with
explosives.
[move][sub]Actually, I really am[/sub][/move]

My first run was with Axton- and was pretty much vanilla, as I
was just trying to learn the game. I admit that I enjoy his-
"And that's a bullet for YOU, and a bullet for YOU, and---
everybody gets a bullet!" banter.
So I grabbed most of the DLC- not worrying about the "headhunter
packs" at the moment- and made a Zer0 build. Started Torgue's
Campaign of Carnage (because of the Tiny Tina cameo- because
yes- she is simply awesome). I have respeced my assassin once,
to get the Execute skill.
Finished the Pirate's Booty DLC over the weekend--- much fun
with that. And now... it's TINY TINA! Assault on Dragon Keep.
Wooo Hooooo.
I am not picky about which weapons, I rotate through sniper
rifles, assault rifles, pistols and launchers, with grenades for
crowd-control. Probably mostly using long guns and then close
for melee to get the health boost.

My first complete runthrough of Borderlands 1 was with Lillith,
chosen mainly so I could use the hilariously overpowered Phoenix
power along with the ever-useful Phasewalk. I spent most of the
game either invisible and moving at high speed, or setting
things on fire. It was great.
BL2 was first done with Axton, and I spent most of the game
using a sniper rifle, launcher, assault rifle and shotgun along
with his ever-useful turret (dat missile launcher
upgrade...damn!). My second playthrough is currently with
Salvador, and all pretenses of subtlety have been dropped in
favour of one dual-wielding slot being taken up by a pair of
shotguns, and the other by whatever will shoot the fastest, be
it SMGs, assault rifles or repeaters/revolvers. It is
blood-soaked and it is good.

Well, gotten to Sanctuary, getting some sidequests done before
going for the Firehawk. At this point I'm only using a pistol
and a sniper rifle, and both do incendiary damage, so that's
really not gonna work...
I think once I'm done with Zer0 I'll take a stab at Axton. Never
played him, or Roland in Borderlands, so it'll be something
different.

Ugh.
Marcus is trolling me.
I'm about to hit Frostburn Canyon, and I can't find any
half-decent replacements for my fire-elemental weapons :(

Um--- do not know if you feel that using Shift codes is
cheating... or what platform you are on... but you can enter
some Shift codes to get keys that open the box in the Fast
Travel station in Sanctuary. And there is also one that gives
you an awesome SMG (Electrical plus Slag).
The drawback is it slags YOU as well....

My biggest problem... well besides dying a lot- which costs
money- and getting sidetracked by challenges and side
missions.... OK.... ONE of my biggest problems is fighting down
my impulse to "collect" anything with special text. Which
causes me to fill up the Vault in Sanctuary and Claptrap's Stash
and my backpack with items I don't actually use....
Sigh. It was ever thus. Going all the way back to at least
Morrowind, my characters lug around the equivalent of a pawn
shop because I think "Well- that MIGHT be useful- better hang on
to it."

Funnily enough, I don't have that problem in Borderlands1 or 2,
though I tend to collect special gear in other games. That said
I do plan to hang onto that shotgun that used to be a droid,
maybe one or two others...
Don't shift codes require you to be online? Not an option for my
360, so I'm stuck basically reloading over and over to see what
Marcus has in stock. I just can't get hold of a non-jacob's
sniper rifle with anything like the base damage of my current
maliwan one. And it has to be non-jacob's, just because of the
recoil.

I tend to swap out stuff on the fly as I go, and don't generally
get too attached to my weapons (aside from one Orange-Rarity
eternity repeater from Vladof which is passed down from
character to character like a watch or an interesting genetic
disease) personally. I usually end up going for specific weapon
'slots' though; that slot is for my sniper rifle, this one is
for my missile launcher, that one's for the shotgun etc.
Also, I've just been trying to find my copy of Borderlands 2 for
some fun playing it and right now I can't. Much rage.

Well... phooey. Yes- they require connectivity.
One thing I have found- at least on xBox is that ammunition is
cheapest at Southpaw Steam and Power (something like $10 per)-
except for launcher rockets, which are around $334 per 12 at
Tundra Express....
Doesn't help with getting a non-fire elemental weapon of
course....

Well, I managed to find one, and wrapped up the Canyon. Now I'm
running errands for that bloody incinerator nutjob, and looking
for some new weapons. Should have better luck now that the level
of the ones available has gone up. Good job I've got something
like ten grand to spend, hopefully I'll find a decent shock
sniper rifle.
There's variation in the prices for ammo? I just bought the
stuff from wherever I could when needed, I'll have to keep an
eye out for that.
