Shareware

Anyone remember that phenomena? You got one or a few levels of a
game for free and if you liked it you were encouraged to buy the
full version which included more levels, more music, often
passwords and other goodies. Plus you got rid of those oh so
annoying messages telling you to buy the full version that
popped up while entering or exiting the games ;)
Not only did you get to play a little for free, you were
encouraged to spread it around to others as much as you could!
Free testing for gamers and free advertising for the companies,
everybody wins! Nowadays we donīt have that try-for-free thing
and maybe itīs an obsolete idea, but I for one really like it :)

Seems to me an early version of Wolfenstein was like that
In fact, that was Id Software's(?) "business model"

iD was big in that, yes. Iīve played shareware versions of
Wolfenstein, Doom and Quake II and it was so much fun to be able
to just try them out!
