18 and up site?
By: Elisabeth Hollow Date: May 30, 2014, 10:28 pm

I've been thinking, and realized that the content on this site
is not for kids.
Obviously we can't stop kids from coming in here. But should we
make this site exclusive?
I feel 16 is appropriate, however, with the r and NC17 boards,
this could get tricky.
I'll leave it up to y'all.

That's a toughy...
An 18+ site suggests a certain type of behaviour to some
people...And I don't want to be a part of that sort of thing...
:D ...You know what I mean...You'll get hordes descending
wanting to swear with every other word and talking sex
24-7...Not like us at all...No...
I think it should be 16+ but have the NC-17 sub-forum password
locked to anyone younger...(Sorry Mustardio ;D)...Should we get
any youngsters, of course...
R rated is 15 over here...So the 16+ thing would work there...As
I'm unlikely to go beyond PG-13/12A then I'm not gonna fall foul
of that one... :P ...
I know what you mean about the concern...You're the boss...It's
up to you...Thinking about it further, it could still be 18+ and
make the rules clear on every single forum section about what
behaviour you'll allow and not, of course...

I'm just gonna agree with McB on this one, he's already said
pretty much everything I was gonna say.

I agree with McB too although I voted 18+. I donīt want swearing
for the sake of swearing and other adult talk here. Lets all
work to keep it at least somewhat clean... ;D

I voted 16+, which I feel should generally be appropriate enough
for the stuff on the forum (Rated R is 16, I think, and that's
where the majority of the fan-fiction content goes so that works
well enough. Correct me if I'm wrong). It still keeps things
reasonably clean, but allows enough free reign for stories to
include most stuff.
The only wobbly point here is, of course, the NC-17 section, but
I'm honestly not sure it's going to be an issue; it's marked out
at NC-17, and people who read the stuff there are going to be
reading it while aware that it's going to contain more extreme
content. McBadgere's idea of a password wall *could* work, but,
no offence, it's kind of unwieldy and impractical to implement.
I'd personally go for what I've done on Madgod; have a rule
making all writers who post stories there put up a content
warning so that anyone who starts reading is going to be
forewarned about what's in there. If they complain or get upset
about it, the only person they have to blame for it is
themselves.

How so?...We have to input a password to read the fan-fic
section in the first place - ie, sign in...
So, you put a "password access only" thing on the other
sub-forum, and Lizzie only distributes the password to those
she knows are over 17...
There's was Adult only areas -'cause sometimes you just wanna
get away from the kids, y'know? - on a couple of the ones I ran,
implemented in the same way...It's not that difficult, just keep
the password Pimm in yer inbox...

I'm more thinking in the long term; if we end up getting bigger,
then that's going to be more permissions that need to be handed
out and so forth and then if the password gets changed for
whatever reason then they need to reissue etc. Plus it's not so
much a password to the fanfic section so much as the thing
becomes visible to signed in members and doing the non-visible
NC-17 thing with different groups of signed-in members could be
annoying.
Maybe it's less hassle than I imagine, but whatever, it isn't my
decision.

Granted, it was always the Invision boards I did, but you can
have the forum visible to everyone, then when you click on it,
it asks for a password is all...
But yeah, you can have hidden forums until you sign in...I know
the Chorrol mods will have this lavish palace of a hidden room
where I have no doubt there's threads and threads about all of
us troublemakers and such like... ;D ...
But that's not what I'm on about...
