-Chapter 1-
A woman in dark clothing wandered through the dark streets of
the imperial city. She pulled her black cowl over her head and
shielded the small bundle in her arms as a cold breeze blew
through the empty, stone streets of the Imperial City. Masser
and Secunda shone brightly in the clear night sky as the woman
walked through the streets at a quick pace, the only sounds
echoing through the empty streets coming from the light patter
of her own feet. She stopped at a single building and looked up
at the sign, then gently set a small, whimpering infant down on
the steps.
"Shh." She cooed softly to the child "You'll be okay here, my
child. Don't cry."
The infant began squirming and whimpered louder.
A sad look passed over the woman's face.
"I love you, my boy." She knocked on the door twice and quickly
fled as the infant began to bawl. An elderly imperial woman
opened the door. A surprised look crossed her face as she picked
up the crying infant. She gently cradled the small child in her
arms and glanced around for any sign of the parents of the
child. She sighed when it hit her that there was nobody there,
then retreated into the building. She continued to cradle the
crying child.
"Shh. Hush, child. You must be hungry." She said softly "Lets
feed you and get you to bed."
The infant's cries began fading to soft whimpers. He looked up
at the elderly woman, a pitiful, helpless look in his emerald
green eyes. The elderly woman smiled down at him
"You've got beautiful eyes, child." She murmured. She bathed,
fed, and clothed the infant, then brought him to a room with a
few cribs. In each crib, a baby lay silent and motionless as it
resided in a peaceful slumber. The elderly woman set the infant
with emerald green eyes down in an empty crib. She smiled
"You're a beautiful baby boy." She whispered "Too bad you don't
have a name."
The infant whimpered and kicked his legs. She chuckled
"I think I'll call you Maverick." The woman sighed and rubbed
her temples as the small infant began bawling. She picked him up
and gently rocked him until he fell into a gentle slumber, then
set him back down in his crib. She quietly closed the door to
the room, then returned to her room and settled down for the
night.

**Twenty-three years later
A male figure in dark armor and a heavy, hooded cloak slipped
through the dark city. Masser and Secunda shone brightly in the
clear, star filled sky, and not a single noise, except for the
gentle ringing of the buoys in the waterfront, was heard through
the city. The dark figure crept up to a large mansion. He pulled
his jet black cowl over his furrowed brow, and adjusted the dark
mask that covered his mouth and nose as he pulled out a small
copper lockpick. He slid the copper pick into the keyhole, and
gently coaxed the pegs of the lock into their slots. In a matter
of seconds, a distinct click was heard, and the figure gently
turned the door handle and pushed the door open.
He silently slipped through the crack he had made in the door
before shutting it behind him, and began scanning the house for
any valuables. He approached a desk with a single dimming candle
on it. He studied the candle with a focused look in his emerald
green eyes. He watched as clear, warm wax dripped down the side
of the candle, starting it's path from where the small dying
fire was, and falling into the silver candleholder. He quickly
snuffed out the light and snatched the candleholder off of the
desk before opening one of the small drawers. He pulled out a
few septims, an inkpot, and a small silver ring with a simple
nordic design carved into its rim. He shoved his stolen goods
into one of his many pockets and quietly made his way up the
stairs into the owner of the large mansion's quarters.
He stood up from his crouching position as he observed the man
sleeping on the bed. The man snored loudly, occasionally letting
out a violent cough and turning over before the snoring resumed.
The dark figure quietly stepped towards the bed, careful not to
make any noise. A frown formed under his mask as the man on the
bed snored, completely oblivious to the fact he was being
watched. The dark figure clenched his fists, and quickly
stripped the room of any of it's valuables before fleeing out
the window and climbing up onto the roof.
He silently leapt from rooftop to rooftop, careful not to lose
his footing. He stopped on top of the roof of an abandoned
house, and slid into a room on the upper floor through a window.
He sighed and began pulling his dark leather armor and hooded
cloak off, revealing a pale, but tall, lean, and muscular body.
He tossed them on the floor and sat on the bed. He let out an
exhausted sigh as he stood up and cleared the pockets of his
armor. He briefly studied his stolen goods before tossing them
into a large chest and collapsing onto the bed. He rubbed his
eyes and quickly fell into a deep sleep.
*******
The thief was woken up by a someone hitting him with a pillow.
He grunted and groaned at the enthusiastic young Breton girl
grinning at him.
"Ugh."
"Wake up, Maverick!! You promised you'd teach me about
lockpicking!"
Maverick rubbed his eyes and rolled onto his his stomach
"Come back later." He mumbled sleepily.
The girl smacked him in the back of the head with a pillow.
Maverick grunted and tensed up
"Allison!"
The girl giggled and twirled a lock of her light brown hair
around her index finger
"Sorry, Maverick."
Maverick sighed
"Stop twirling your hair and get outta my room so I can get
dressed."
"Gods, cranky much?"
Maverick paused and looked at her. He pursed his lips
"I had a long night." He said simply before shooing her out of
the room. He put on a simple white shirt, loose sack cloth
pants, and a pair of sandals before heading downstairs. He sat
at the kitchen table and briefly ran his fingers through his
shaggy, dark brown hair, and rubbed the stubble on his chin
before looking up at Allison.
"You're too hyper." He said in a flat tone "You need to control
that. A hyper thief isn't a quiet thief."
"At least I'm not always cranky like you."
Maverick huffed
"I'm not cranky. I'm serious about what I do."
"I am too!!"
"You almost got caught by the guards last week, child!"
"Accidents happen!"
"You tried to pet the guard dog in the house we broke into! That
is NOT being careful!!"
Allison groaned
"You're so uptight! You need to loosen up. Let's go to the
market district and explore!"
"I don't like the sun. Or the noise. Or the smells. Or the
people."
"You're a pessimist, you know that, right?" Allison grabbed his
arm and tried to pull him off of the chair "Lets go!"
Maverick groaned and stood up, causing the teen girl in front of
him to stumble backwards and fall on her butt. She giggled and
looked up at him with her bright blue eyes.
Maverick sighed and helped her up
"Lets just get this over with."
Allison stood up and brushed her blue dress off. She grinned
"It'll be fun to meet new people! Come on!"
Maverick groaned in agony and followed the energetic teen.
