       ----
Footsteps thumps lightly on the newly cobbled roads of the
southern end of the city of Kvatch. A cloaked and hooded figure
slipped between alleyways, and, depsite the night's warmth, did
not pull her cowl down. Pale skin and blue eyes peeked from
behind the dark hood, though the locals on the southern side of
the city knew her well and knew what to expect. She kept to
herself, mostly, her and the man she was usually seen with. Some
speculated about her past, saying she was raised by vampires,
others said she was in the Dark Brotherhood.
A piece of parchment slid past her feet idly by a breeze, and
she picked it up. She tossed it aside; it was her own flyer,
calling for members of the Lost Knights. Neither she nor Gareth
could draw, so the parchment contained only text and no
pictures. Which was just as well, they didn't want the
dimwitted, lured in by promises of gold and fame, glory or
fortune. Anais had had enough of taking from others. It had
       gotten her nowhere in life.
Retribution was far from her mind, though. As she opened the
door to the Nine Wench Tavern near the gates, her eyes scanned
the crowded barroom and quickly found the man she was looking
for. She sat next to Gareth, who was listening politely to a
pretty-and busty- serving wench. The woman gave her a once over
       before speaking.
"Can I get you anything, sir?"
Her face flushed in embarrasment when Anais pulled her cowl and
hood down, reavealing a very feminine face.
"Chicken, seasoned with salt, sage, and basil, and a glass of
       red wine."
       "Yes, ma'am."
Once the woman left, Anais gave a wry smile to Gareth.
"Diseased. Keep yourself out of her. And if you can't help
yourself, I can give you a few potions." She set an old tome
down on the table from the bag she was carrying. When she opened
it, the bindings creaked, and she blew a bit of dust from it.
"Look at this. Isn't this fascinating?" She ran her fingers over
the daedric text and let out a little purr. "Supposedly this
book shows the reader how to properly use the Doomstones around
Tamriel." She closed it and left the book on top of the table.
"It's also how our prospects are going to find us. No one else
has an old book. I told them to look for an irresistable mage
and a grumpy scoundrel." She gave Gareth a wink before sipping
the wine the wench had brought out.

       Gareth smiled sweetly at her
"I don't go after wenches. They tend to carry disease." He
grabbed the tome and inspected it, then opened it "This truly is
fascinating. Too bad I can't read daedric. If this tome holds
the secrets to the runestones that dot Cyrodiil, we could
probably find some good use for those ugly ass rocks." He set
the book back down "Maybe those stones could help us with
restoring Kvatch to it's former glory in some way. I hear they
produce powerful magic." He let out a small sigh and sipped his
wine. He licked his lips, then set the cup down. He glanced
       around the inn.
"Hmm. Not many people in this place tonight. I wonder how many
people will be finding our pathetic little flyers on the
ground." He chuckled to himself and adjusted his dark cowl and
cloak. He pulled out his dagger and inspected it. "Hmm. I can't
wait until more nobility move into Kvatch. Can't wait to stick
my fingers into their fat coinpurses." He shifted in his seat
and pulled out a lockpick. He inspected it, occasionally
glancing at people that entered the tavern.

Delvam strode into the city of Kvatch, his golden armour
gleaming even in the starlight, which made the grey in his hair
shine silver. Though years had passed since the cities
decimation, he could swear he could smell just the faintest hint
of ash in the air. It was almost comforting, an ever so slight
reminder of Vvardenfell, now a century distant. A tight smile
crept onto his face, only to be replaced by a scowl that came
easily to him, as the thought of his former home were followed
       by memories of his departure.
He closed his eyes for a moment, tilting his head back and
reaching out with senses bolstered by magic. Nothing. No trace
of the energies that had once anchored a Great Gate here, if
only for a night. He hadn't expected much, but what Sorcerer
could resist such a lure? He opened his eyes as a sheet of
parchment caught against his Dwemer-forged boot, and with a
thought it fluttered up to his waiting hand. A flyer for a
mercenary company. Delvam sneered momentarily, then let it drop,
to be caught once more by the wind.
No sooner had it begun to flit away, than he turned and brought
it back to his hand. The journey here had been expensive, and
perhaps there were other opportunities to be found in Cyrodiil.
But with his depleted coinpurse, there was little he could do.
He had served with mercenary companies in the past, and the pay
had always made it worth the effort. The flyer mentioned a place
the Nine Wench Tavern, and just the name was nearly enough to
convince Delvam to cast the flyer to the night breeze once more.
But pragmatism reasserted itself, no coin meant no options, and
that would mean groveling to the Mages Guild.
The tavern was just inside the city gates, another mark in
favour of these "Lost Knights". Delvam had no inclination to
wander the streets looking for them. Reading the flyer a little
more carefully, Delvam caught something mentioned worthy of
investigating: these "Lost Knights" were apparently in
possession of a daedric text of some sort! Curious if nothing
else, Delvam made his way to the tavern, fighting the urge to
       scowl as he entered.
Delvam's eyes scanned the tavern, searching every table for a
book, before his eyes fell upon it. He made his way over to the
table, sizing up the two figures seated there as he did. The man
looked to be Imperial, and Delvam immediately noticed the
lockpick being examined by the man. A thief, or one who ran with
them. The woman was more of an interest to Delvam, clearly the
tome in question was hers. She was certainly striking, her red
hair blazing almost like fire, and Delvam noted the lack of
armour, guessing her to be a mage.
He took a seat at their table, setting his pack down beside the
chair, and placed the flyer before him. Looking the woman
straight in the eyes, he opted for simplicity. "I'm interested
       in joining your company"

Anaïs glanced briefly down at the flyer, then brought her blue
eyes back to the Dunmer's face. Her reddened lips smiled as she
reached over and lightly touched the man's hand with a fingertip
and breathed in, never breaking eye contact.
"You're a Mage as well. Given, you are a Dunmer, if you forgive
my momentary racism. But you seem to be...very skilled." She
took her hand off of his and grabbed the book and slid it to
him, still not breaking eye contact.
"Which means it should be well within your abilities to read
this tome." She gave him a smirk after giving him a once-over.
"Impress me, and we'll see if we can't squeeze you in to our
       tight little group."

Gareth looked up from the lockpick he was inspecting and began
observing the dunmer man that stood before him. He slid the
lockpick beneath his cloak and smiled up at the dunmer.
"So, you're a Mage, eh? What classes do you specialize in?
Destruction? Illusion? If you don't mind sharing with me." He
took a sip of his wine and eyed the tome Anaïs had handed to the
       dunmer.
"So, friend, what's your name? I sincerely apologize if I am
bombarding you with too many quesions for your comfort, I do not
mean to offend nor upset you, I am just curious and enjoy
meeting new people." He gave the dunmer a genuine smile and
leaned back in his chair, then finished his wine. He signaled
the serving wench over and had his glass refilled. "Would you
like a drink, and a seat at the table?" He said as he looked
back up at the blue skinned elf in front of him.

Delvam's eyes gleamed with a hint of admiration for this young
woman, firstly for her ability to sense his talent with a touch,
and secondly for challenging him so brazenly. He held her gaze
for a moment more, the ghost of a smile flitting in and out of
sight, then turned his attention to the book, running his hands
       across it, inspecting the bindings.
"Indeed I am a Mage, and Telvanni trained. I spent much time in
the library of the Magister who trained me, so I can tell you
from the bindings that this book was written no later than the
first century of the Second Era. It's bound not with leather,
but with cured scamp skin. It's far more resilient and possessed
of certain properties that make it a more suitable choice for
tomes of this nature." His eyes flickered to the thief for a
moment before returning to the tome. "And to answer your
questions, I am an expert conjurer, specialising in deadra, and
have considerable expertise in destruction, alteration,
mysticism, and alchemy. And I've spent two centuries in study
and practice. And wine, something with a little quality, if you
       please."
His eyes flickered away from the tome once more, holding the
woman's gaze for a moment as he spoke. "And my name, is Delvam
Aryon." He returned his attention to the tome, carefully opening
it and studying the first written page. "Hmm... It seems the
author wrote a foreword to his work:
'Herein do I chronicle all that can be learned of the standing
stones that draw on the power of the heavens. Three works shall
there be, to hold all knowledge of them, that it might find a
place in the library of Hermaeus Mora.'
A little archaic, but to the point at least." He slid the tome
back to the woman, once more meeting her gaze. "It seems that
this tome alone might be of limited worth, without the other
two. Should you gather all three however, their value would
       extend far beyond coin."

Anaïs leaned back in her chair, crossing her legs. The smirk,
now moreso a smile, was still on her lips.
"Impressive," she said as she brought her wine to her lips. She
set it down after a small sip. "And correct on all accounts.
Better scamp skin than human, wouldn't you agree?" She gave him
another once-over. "I wonder what other skills you've honed in
two hundred years. I hear the lovers of Dunmer men are quite
pleased." She ran her fingertips along the rim of her wine glass
as she spoke, keeping eye contact.

Gareth turned to Anaïs and rested his elbows on the table, and
       his head on his hands.
"Aren't you flirty today, hmm? Tsk tsk. I'd expect better
behavior from a business woman." He grinned at her "Well, if you
do get lucky with this dunmer man here, I could stay in the room
with you two and instruct you how to please the man. It being
your first time and all I'm sure you'd love a bit of help." He
looked at Delvam "Let me tell you about the time she almost got
a man in her bed." He got a mischievous look in his eyes as he
began to form a false story in his head. He looked at Anaïs and
gave her an innocent smile "Remember that story about the Breton
man you brought home with you? How you two were drunk, and
things started getting heavy so you brought him up to your room?
You told me how you chickened out of sexual intercourse with him
when he pulled his pants down because you were startled by his
size. You went into the bathing room and climbed out the window
and fled!" Gareth doubled over in laughter at his own story

Delvam tore his gaze from the woman's eyes as the thief spoke,
and sneered at him as he launched into his story. No sooner had
the thief finished than Delvam spoke.
"I saw the pick in your hand as I approached, I know you for
what you are. The word of a thief carries no weight in my mind,
especially one who speaks slander when silence would serve
better. Such a tongue should learn to be silent in the presence
of it's betters, lest it be silenced permanently."
He turned his eyes back upon the woman, who glared furiously at
the thief, and touched her arm to get her attention. "Perhaps,
if the fool is done, introductions should be made? I am not here
       for idle chatter."

Anaïs looked back at Delvam, her face softening.
"Yes, we did not come to trade barbs and completely false
stories." She shot Gareth another scathing glance before looking
       back at Delvam.
"Anaïs Fontaine, though the locals call me Iron Mistress. And
no," she held a finger to Gareth's lips as he opened his mouth,
"it is NOT for the iron chastity belt. He's told that joke
before. Gareth loves to embarrass me. Come with knowing each
       other for years."
She ordered Delvam some wine as she sipped her own.
"Now, tell me, why is someone who can read Daedric in a tavern
such as this, looking to join a mercenary company?"
Her food came, smelling delicious. A silver fork and knife rose
from the table and began cutting it up slowly as she waited for
his answer, her hand poised above the plate and her eyes on him.
