Portishead - "Only You"
Memorytrip with me back to 1997...or was it 1998? Nearly twenty
years ago now,....It still feels so much a part of my current
identity.
I don't advocate the use of prohibited drugs, I just so happened
to have been smokin' weed at the time. There's never been a
single case of documented physical addiction or overdose, so I
don't consider it a 'narcotic'. People say "It's illegal for a
reason!" but know not what that reason is. Untaxable largely,
that and hemp makes for cheap paper, can't have competition. But
that's a talk for another time.
Have you ever had a sleepless night? I mean a peaceful sleepless
night. A night you spent alone with your imaginary friend, the
one who was guiding you out of the arrogance and downward
spirals of your teenage rebellion and into the peaceful ways of
the enlightened early twenties.
MTV still played music at this time...though largely at night.
Two in the morning and the rush of Sprite's carbonation filled
my Blue Chalice, a ninety-nine cent plastic cup from the local
Ralph's I haunted. I was young, optimistic, and had time, love,
and liberty, yet I felt none of these things, yet craved them
so. Yet for the first time, I was enjoying spending time with
who I was and who I was becoming.
This song played on such a sleepless night. It's every chord and
trippy vibe can take me back and recall such an event.

I was never a big Portishead fan...They were part of a trip-hop
culture that seemed to spring up from a city on the south coast
of the UK, Bristol...There seemed to be a few coming out of that
place...My fave was always Massive Attack...And here's my fave
song of theirs...

throughout my haze, one song seemed to define it all for me...It
was blasted at me at full volume in the back of a Peugeot 206
the first time I tried it...Ah, those were the days...
I loved it then, and I love it now...
