The announcement by Jaguar Land Rover that it is cutting its UK
workforce by over 4,000 workers citing continuing “uncertainty”
over Brexit on the surface looks, on the surface, like a damming
indictment of the entire Brexit endeavour.
However, this may well be a case of there being more to this
situation than meets the eye as is often the case especially in
the current volatile climate.
Ralf Speth, JLR’s Chief Executive, has been accused of making a
series of poor strategic decisons which have led to the firms
current malaise.
Furthermore, a year before the Brexit referendum in 2015, JLR
moved production of its Land Rover Discovery model to Slovakia.
The Slovak government gave the firm a £110 million incentive to
move the production from its former site in Solihull. EU rules
prevented the British government objecting to this blatant
poaching of British jobs. The European Commission allowed the
grant to be given as the area the new factory is situated in is
classed as “deprived”, therefore eligible for state support
under its rules.
Jacob Rees-Mogg however pointed out that Brexit would end such
deals. Furthermore, he called for the sweetner to be
investigated and potentially be deducted from the £39 Billion
that Britain will give the EU as part of the Withdrawal
Agreement.
It is certainly true that all is clearly not as it appears in
this case and that far from Brexit being to blame for the job
losses it certainly would have prevented some from ever
happening.
