So far...

136,000 homes in our county were damaged by the floods Harvey
brought our way.
I Cannot even begin to describe the devastation I've seen
countywide in the last two weeks.
Neighborhood after neighborhood, looks like they are preparing
earthworks for an invasion, except the earthworks are the
interiors of their flooded homes piled on the curbsides. From
humble neighborhoods to gated communities full of mansions and
McMansions.
Roads buckled, sinkholes....Huge office buildings still
surrounded by tepid, now stinking ponds of water.....
Just defies description, and I think I'm getting a case of
survivors remorse.

I know we're not God or Mother Nature, but we're America. FEMA
should be better. When it comes to our lives and property, it
should be the federal budget's priority to repair the damage.
There shouldn't be a question of how much money we allocate to
disaster relief. How much money have we spent on the middle-east
conflict? I'm almost 26, and we've been at war since I was
almost 10. Since then, I saw the failure of Katrina and I
thought we'd learn. Apparently not.

They're reporting 25% of homes in Key West were completely
destroyed. Of course the other 75% aren't in preserved pristine
condition. I'll bet few had flood insurance. FEMA won't be able
to be all things to all people. Their offerings will fall short.
IIRC Trump was going to cut FEMA (in the federal budget) by
20%. That went out the window with Harvey and Irma.

My SIL just posted pics..she is in Islamorada..they had just
completed extensive renovations of their place in Feb...
not a pretty sight, their dock is gone, their boat is the the
swimming pool..I can't think of the name of those thatched roof
outbuildings.. Dave? that people have in the Keys..they have 3
..they had just had them renovated with new roofs,..Gone.
Main house is elevated, no structural damage they think..but the
pros will have to decide that.
Roof held, even their 2 ancient Banyan trees with down.

Sounds horrific Ron... :(. Hope your Sis had insurance to help
with her recovery. My area, it was rising water that did 90% of
the damage. Farther south on our coast was where Harvey's wind
did unwanted renovation.

Familiar with the firm but not anyone who worked there. Wish I
had some ancient relatives so well-heeled.
Y'know, I guess life in the Keys is pretty idyllic...But having
spent my life in heat and humidity...If I inherited vast sums
I'd have to at least have a vacation home in much cooler climes
to escape the summers here. Would that make me a Sunbird?
George H.W. Bush winters here in Houston but summers in
Kennebunkport, Maine. I always knew the guy was smart.

Sad story, just heard from my SIL..her 81/2 year old Golden
Retriever died of Cancer this morning..
Vet seems to think he had it working in his system,
but the stress of moving from one place to another getting a
few miles ahead of Irma, did the poor guy in quickly.
