I bought 15 gallons of jugged water. I have lots of AA and AAA
batteries - they'll keep my little LED flashlights and Sony
(radio only) walkman going. I have no generator or kayak. My
worst hurricane was Charley, but only (for me personally) 5
days without power and no loss of water. But I realize my time
       may be coming.
Watching all those people in Houston streaming into shelters was
eye opening for me. Putting myself in their place thinking of
how I'd fare crammed in a big arena sized space with just my
       pillow and a few clothes.
Sending my wishful thoughts to the hurricane gods.
       Hope Luke is doing OK.

       AJ and Dave,
..Ironically I was due to be in PR this coming weekend but we
cancelled our plans because I was supposed to get my 5 year
hosing (Colonoscopy) on Sept. 11 ... then they cancelled my
appt.because I need to get my cardiologists approval..won't get
to see him 'til Late Oct.
My place is in Rincon PR.. Rincón literally means ' left Corner'
so if you look at the left corner of a map of PR.you will get
       an approx locale.
My FIL lives in Ponce..Caribbean side..
He is an old Soldier, always prepared, water, food, back up
generator..power outages are a common occurance in PR.
My Sister in law lives on Key Largo..she left yesterday.. no
storm supplies to be had, because the big box stores were
cleaned out..most of the stuff was sent out to Houston last
       week.
Glad you are stocked up Dave, I wouldn't expect you not to
be...you seem like a take charge, practical guy..
and yes, I am simpático with you on the shelter survival
thing...I don't think I could handle that stuff..
I'd rather take my chances on my own..
On a lighter note, my bud in Fort Meyers Fl. posted on
Facebook, that he was pretty much prepared, but he was short on
batteries...did anyone have any to spare? .His brother, who
lives iabout a mile away, posted, 'You can have all my dead
       batteries, free of charge.' : ~}

I'm really glad you checked in Compadre, because I'd remember
you saying you'd be flying off to your P.R. slice of Heaven a
while back and I'm glad as hell you didn't.
Dave I hope you have plenty of canned goods etc. If you are in
an area prone to flooding...Do us all a favor and GET THE HELL
       OUT OF FLORIDA!!
My town is still a fucking mess. Major throughfares still under
water and so many, many neighborhoods. It breaks my heart seeing
so many folks, and I mean from the Well-Heeled to the No-Heeled,
out of their homes and so many that have lost everything. It
       breaks my heart.
The thing about Irma is she is a tight and powerful storm. She's
moving pretty fast, as far as hurricanes go. So she's gonna be a
beast, but she's not gonna just hang out, pussyfoot about moving
on like Harvey did. That's what fucked all of us. Harvey just
took his time meandering up into Texas, back out to the Gulf,
back into Texas, back out in the Gulf....So we just were stuck
with days and days of unrelenting rain.
Luke, I hope like Hell that your IL's come out ok, your love
shack doesn't sustain any damage, and you wife isn't overcome
       with worry about her folks.
Best of vibes to both you guys, Luke and Dave....
And Dave.....Get the fuck out of the way of that Goddamn storm
       will ya?

       Thanks,AJ.
.Papi has ridden out many storms in PR..he is an old Vet of the
65th Infantry..fought in Korea, and is always prepared..but as
you said..this storm is a beast..he is located on the leeward
side..so we have our fingers crossed.
       My place in Rincon?
It's just that...a place, if it goes..so be it.
       Fuck it...it is Kismet.
Yeah, Dave has some immediate concern..another 5 million peeps
       are now in Irma's path.
       Mojo and positive thoughts sent.

Orlando is about 40 miles inland from Daytona. So the potential
storm surge shouldn't be an issue. Last I heard 6/12 inches of
       rain predicted.
       Pros:
My house is cinder block. Built in 1955. I think it's fairly
solid. In 1996 I had a major remodel which included new windows.
In 2004 another major remodel included a new METAL roof. With
the tie down thingies. I had an inspection for my wind
mitigation insurance discount. My street has a curb and my
house in maybe 1 1/2 to 2 feet off the ground, with a crawl
space. Hopefully the slight elevation will help with flooding
       rains.
       Cons:
I am concerned with something (i.e. flying debris) flying thru
my living or dining room window. My next door neighbor, who has
maybe 6 rental properties, has a trailer in his driveway with
chunks of oak wood about 4-5 inches in diameter and maybe 1-2
feet long. He has a couple of straps "securing" them, but I'm
wondering about say a 120 mile wind gust or tornado. Also they
are saying that the NE quadrant is the "dirty side" of the
storm. And there will be some winds blowing from South to North
       - which puts 2 mature oak trees at risk for blowing down.
Don't know whether to ask the neighbor if the wood is staying
put for the duration. He is a bit of a hothead.

Local TV weather says my winds should be blowing from East to
West - which is in my favor. Of course there can be all sorts
       of randomly generated tornadoes.
Supposed to be getting bad beginning in about 3 - 4 hours from
       now.
