       Wuddabout fish?

I loves me some freshwater fish.
       Walleye is peerless.
Panfish---the sunfishes (bluegill, punkin seed, bream, &c),
       perch, croppie/crappie, rock bass---nothing compares.
Northern pike can be good but what a PITA dealing with the
       bones!
       Catfish. Oh hell yeah.
Bass is not that good up north here, but when i lived in the
south, 2-4lb bass was excellent eats. Large and smallmouth. A
       good fight, to boot!
Hoping to feel well enough to do some ice fishing this year. Got
all the gear, live amidst 100s of lakes. Panfish pulled outta
cold water, filleted and grilled---that's living well 8)

Croppie is my favorite freshwater fish, along with rainbow
trout. Bass is good eating, but croppie tops it IMHO. Catfish is
popular as hell down here because it's so plentiful. You can
catch catfish damn near anywhere down here. Lakes, creeks,
rivers...all full of 'em. I honestly don't care for them myself.
I'm the only one I know that feels that way though. I used to
cook them all the time for my late wife and the Lad, but I'd
just eat the sides I made with the fish. Salt fish are
different, and I like most of them with the exception of
flounder. The sand trout on the coast are tasty, but only on the
day of catch. They just turn to mush in the freezer. I guess
King Mackerel is my favorite Gulf Coast catch. Sautéed with
butter and garlic. Damn fine eating there. Drum are a big thing
down here too, but I don't care for them myself.
I have always wanted to go ice fishing. I don't know why. From
what I have seen of it, it's sorta like sitting in a deer blind,
except the prey is below, and you maybe have company in the
hut(Or whatever y'all call 'em). Just looks like fun for some
reason. Michigan would seem to be a fisherman's paradise to me.
I understand you can't go 7 miles anywhere in the state without
hitting water. Mebbe that's a white lie? We tell a few white
       lies down here.
In fact....Texans are regarded as some of the greatest liars
       ever to trod earth. ;D

If you like croppie, I bet you'd love walleye. Ever had it? My
absolute favorite. Especially through the ice. Sweeter in the
       cold.
The only non-commercial saltwater fish I've had were from a
"deep sea" trip we took while on vacation in Daytona when I was
       12. I caught a couple king mackerel, the old man caught a
snapper. Good! Friday night fish and chips is a big bar thing
here---it's usually cod, but our local bar when I was a kid did
haddock. Love it. Not much experience with saltwater fish
       outside of that.
"Shanty" is what we call 'em. Stick-framed wooden shanties are
popular but pop-up tent types are becoming more common. The heat
from a propane lantern is enough to keep ya comfy. There are
those who prefer to fish on the open ice, but I'm not one of
them. It gets COLD here. I'm old. Fuck that. I've always cut my
holes with a manual auger, but I might get the auger attachment
for my gas-powered weed whip if I get back into it.
7 miles? Around here, you cant walk 1/2 a mile in a straight
line and keep your feet dry, and that's a no-shitter. You're
"The Lone Star State"; we're "Water Winter Wonderland".
Michigan's cities are shitholes but the rest of the state is
amazing. "Best" is a purely subjective concept, but it's best
for me. I've been a lot of places and some of them were
wonderful, but this is Home and it suits me.
...and I've heard Texans regarded as something else, but that's
a horse of a different color...
