       Just about done
       By: guest13 Date: September 5, 2020, 5:53 am
       ---------------------------------------------------------
Still getting a few tomatoes---unheard of in September, but with
the late start, that's what it is this year. Didn't get a whole
lot. Only canned about half of what we do in a decent year.
Dry beans are almost done, except the scarlet runners---they're
still podding---what's left of the Hidatsas, Calypsos and
Ireland Creek Annies will be used for next year's seed. On
second thought, I don't think I'll grow the Hs and Cs
again---not very good yielders. I'll double up on the Annies
       though, they're delicious.
Snap beans, same---next year's seed. Yellow wax bush, purple and
green pole. They all did real well this year. Put up 16 quarts,
       froze a bunch.
Potato plant tops are starting to die. Time to dump the barrels
       and harvest them.
Got half a dozen or so cantaloupes almost ready to harvest.
Pulled the broc and cauli a while ago after they bolted. Left
the sprouts in hope that I'd get some, but it looks doubtful.
Like I said, that space is going to be used for other things
       that WILL grow.
The canning equipment is being stored until next year's harvest.
Not a great growing season, but not a terrible one (like last
       year) either.
Planning next year's garden already 8)

See, I never understood WHY people chose to live where this
stuff happens. Sure, we have our seasonal extremes, occasional
tornadoes, &c---but it's never all that bad. I guess it comes
down to what you're used to.

In my case, I, and the 5 generations before me, were born here.
As for the ones that came here? Cheap, stable land.

Sure, I get it. Some don't understand why I would choose to live
where it goes below zero and stays there for extended periods.
I've lived many other places that are more moderate, but this is
       home.

Getting frost/freezes most nights now. Currently 51 degrees,
about as warm as it's going to get today.
Putting the gardens to bed for the winter. Left some beans
hanging to dry on the vine for next year's seed stock---that's
about done. Pulling the last of the plants, tossing them in the
compost pile. Topping off the half-barrels with straw.
The maintenance guys here had to remove a flower bed from a lot
to pull the old trailer out. They gave me the soil, bless 'em.
Dumped it in my driveway. Some of my half-barrels could use a
bit more soil; what I don't use for that will be stored until
spring when I add more barrels. Today is shovelling it into the
dump wagon, pulling it around to the barrels that need it,
shovelling it out. I'm good for two trips before I have to rest.
Slowly but surely, it's getting done.

We had out first cool snap earlier this week. Got down in the
       50’s! Course now it’s back near 80. 😡

ohio river frozen solid enough to drive a car on... and you can
have evey snowflake, every glittering ice chip... ive worked

I getcha. Cars and trucks on the lakes is nothing unusual
here---hell, they land airplanes on the Saginaw Bay!
Personally, I can't take heat. Pushes my heart into afib. Saps
my energy. i don't LIKE being cold, but I tolerate it so much
better than heat. I have insulated Carhartt EVERYTHING, Sorel
pac boots rated to -30, serious gloves/mittens, hats, all the
gear to make me look like the Michelin Man when I go outside.
