Just what I needed---another Strat

Popped up on Facebook Marketplace, nearby. Squier Classic Vibe
with Fender Custom Shop 54 pickups (and the originals in a box)
and a like-new Gator hardshell case for a good price.
There are Squiers, and Squiers. Some are rather chintzy. Some
are right solid instruments. The CV line is on a par, IMO, with
MIM Fenders. Maybe even a bit better!
Butterscotch finish, red tort 'guard, rosewood-looking (could be
laurel) fingerboard, big headstock. It's kinda dirty, the 'board
is dry, it's got one good ding in the face. Nothing I can't deal
with. Everything works as it should. Decent action.
Gotta say, these $230 pickups sound rather overly-shrill to my
ears. Way too bright. I'll reinstall the originals, see how I
like them. They're AlNiCos.
Considering the combined MSRPs on all this stuff (new) is about
$800, I feel pretty good about paying $360.
But 14 Strats, fer crine out loud---

Well HNGD Dano! 14 Strats is a lot! Lol! But why the hell not!
I’ve been wanting to buy a new guitar myself..But it’s the “ I
really don’t need one and I oughta just buy a new stove or save
the money, I’m not worthy” thing.

So I broke it all down for cleaning and modifying. DEC04 stamped
in the neck pocket and the end of the neck---a bit older than I
was told, but no problem, that doesn't matter. Ran the serial
number, it was made in the Cort factory in Indonesia.
The seller told me he had a "professional" replace the pickups
and the jack. Definitely not pro-grade soldering---and loose
blobs of solder in the cavities---looks like "I don't give a
shit" work to me. Cheap plastic import switch, dime-sized pots,
tiny wire, and $200+ pickups. Oh, and they're 500k pots. Should
be 250k. No wonder it sounds shrill. I'll have all that sorted
by the end of today. Think I'll wire it master volume/master
tone/blender so I can have all seven pickup combos. I kinda
expected something like this, so I'm not disappointed.
I'll try again to get on that pic-hosting site if you'll give me
the link again.
I still intend to donate some of these to the school music
program, but so far, school isn't going to open until maybe
November.

So.
This Strat ended up wearing two Epiphone humbuckers in a red
tort pickguard instead. NAILS that Joe Walsh James Gang-era Funk
#49 tone. Good for all kinds of classic rock stuff. Plays like
buttah. Very content with it.
Got the pickguard assembly with the pricey Fender pickups,
upgraded switch, pots and cap all wired up and ready to drop
in---just haven't gotten around to it yet. Might leave this one
the way it is---put the 54s in a different guitar.
Still want to try the original Squier pickups too. I'm told by
the Squier fanatics in my FB group that they're quite nice. Got
a gray plywood Strat body (very nice paint job) and cheap maple
(Starcaster, maybe?) neck that needs to be built up. Good
candidate for this project.
So many projects!
Got a MIM Tele on the bench now. Did a crappy rattle-can
metallic pewter refinish on it. This feller Richard Flatt does
laser-engraved Baltic birch plywood pickguards; this one is done
with a woodgrain design, a light amber stain and clear lacquer.
Stock MIM neck pickup, Seymour Duncan Lil 59 bridge humbuckie.
Flipped control plate, push/pull volume pot to split the bridge
pickup. Going to experiment with pot and cap values to see what
works best with this configuration.
Tomorrow I'm taking a 100 mile round trip to acquire yet another
guitar. Tele partscaster. Double-bound classic sunburst alder
body, GFS bridge pickup, Epi neck 'bucker, Squier neck, all
Fender hardware. Proper 3-brass-saddle ashtray bridge. Heavy
gigbag. $275. Still spending my stimulus check money.
Cinny just rolls her eyes ::)
I don't have a problem, I can quit anytime I want.
Yeah.

So I got the Tele, and he knocked fitty bux off the price (not
sure why, maybe he pitied me---). Turns out he works at The
Music Man guitar store in Brighton, MI, about 30 miles from
here. That's where we met. Saved me a bit of gas.
Nitpicks: it has an Electrosocket mounted, which is good, but in
tightening the screws, the finish cracked. A piece of the
clearcoat broke off. I think I can repair that. Clear nail
polish. If I even bother.
One quite noticeable scratch on the upper bout on the back.
Finish only, not into the body. Some automotive polishing
compound and elbow grease might well take care of it.
The string-through holes are just barely peeking out from under
the back side of the bridge. You gotta look close to see them.
No real effect on anything. Snap on an ashtray bridge cover,
they disappear.
SO---nothing much, really.
The good stuff: it has a real nice neck, been stripped and
Tru-Oiled. It sounds good. I love the sunburst.
Not buying any more guitars this year.
