       Jimi Hendrix
By: AJ Date: June 20, 2017, 10:38 pm
       ---------------------------------------------------------
I was 15 in 1967. I was aware of Monterey, primarily from the
print press. I'd just moved from the South side of Houston to
the west side. Didn't know anybody at all. Started a new
school...Discovered a little music shop, walking distance from
our house and started hanging out there. Bought bass strings and
picks..So as to not feel guilty about hanging out. One afternoon
I was in there and noodling on a Vox bass and noticed A kid I
recognized as being on one of my classes. We gave each other
nods...Y'know....Next day at school He asked me If I played bass
and I said I'd been playing about a year. He asked me if I'd
like to come jam with him and another guitar player and I said
sure. Later that day in another class, a guy I'd started talking
to, just the day before had mentioned he drummed, so i told him
about the jam and asked if he'd be interested. He said sure.
Getting to the point....We all got together that weekend...At
the unmet guitarists place. I think we started with "Gloria",
then "Walk don't run". Then I asked if they knew how to play
"Hey Joe", by The Byrds..Everybody said yeah and so we hit it.
After that The guy I knew from class asked if I'd heard the way
Jimi Hendrix played it...I said "No", I'd heard of Jimi
Hendrix..strictly from print..but I'd never heard Jimi Hendrix.
I'd never heard him on radio.
But after I heard the "Are you Experienced" album that weekend
with those fellas....I never listened to music the same way
       again.
That was a hell of a musical year...For me...For the
       World...Sgt' Pepper's...Monterey Pop...Moby
       Grape....

I became aware of Hendrix around the same time. I was 14 when I
got the album for Christmas. It was mind blowing. I didn't have
a lot of money at that age, so any record album I acquired was
special. I had a guitar I'd gotten for Christmas when I was 13.
I had a Mel Bay chord book which gave me a few chords to play
with. I remember trying to play along with "The Wind Cries
Mary". That was about all I could attempt.
I also remember buying "Axis: Bold As Love". Thinking about it
now, I think it is my favorite of his albums released during his
lifetime. I remember hearing something about Monterey around
the time it happened. There wasn't a lot of information
available in my little town back then. When I discovered
"Rolling Stone" a couple of years later in a news stand (in the
mall - one of those with hundreds of magazines and newspapers
from a variety of cities around the country) it was like coming
upon an oasis. Reading about bands I'd heard of and the hippie
       scene was fascinating for me.
Monterey seems to have sparked the trend in big festivals that
began to appear back then. BTW, if I remember correctly, Moby
Grape could've appeared at that festival but Matthew Katz (their
manager) made money demands that weren't met. If they'd
appeared in that film at the height of their powers, they
might've become stars like Hendrix and Joplin. Of course they'd
still have probably still have self destructed (like Hendrix and
Joplin) with the excesses going on back in those days.

"Axis" is my favorite Hendrix album as well Dave. It's a more
mature album than "Are you Experienced" and I think it's tighter
in terms of the material than "Electric Ladyland".
If I had to limit myself to one Hendrix album it would be
       "Axis".
I subscribed to Rolling Stone for more than twenty years, and
saved every copy until I finally decided enough was enough and
took them to a school paper drive. I saved only two. The issue
with John Lennon's interview after he released "Working Class
hero", and the one he where they interviewed him right before he
       was murdered.

First time I heard 'Hey Joe' was by these guys..in 1966.
       I bought the 45 ..
My band and I loved it, learned it immediately and covered it at
       a gig 3 days later,
  HTML https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bi_oFXA0R0Y
       .
Weirdest thing,my brother and I split the vocals and he came out
from behind the keys to sing and bang a cowbell and tambourine
       while he sang.
We never saw this vid 'til 1987.. and how the two lead singers
       split the vocals..
shocked the shit out of us. :D
In 1967, my brother bought some amazing albums..he had an ear,
he bought Rotary Connection, Time has come today by the
Chambers Brothers, Fresh Cream, surrealistic Pillow by Jefferson
Airplane and of course Are you Experienced by Hendrix..
He said, "wait til you heard this cat's version of 'Hey Joe'"
We were good and stoned and just couldn't believe the smoothness
       and flow of it...
But I still truly love the high energy, rawness, and speed of
The Leaves version of Hey Joe..
We opened or closed many a gig with this song..it was a crowd
       pleaser to be sure.

Oh The Leaves version still smokes doesn't it? All the other
songs and albums you mentioned do too...But oddly enough, I
wasn't bowled over by "Fresh Cream at the time. I still dislike
the production values of that album, but it was the times I
guess. The live versions of those tunes was, of course,
phenomenal. "Disraeli Gears" was the album that grabbed me, then
"Wheels of Fire", and "Goodbye'. All of those are some of my
       favorite albums of all time.
Yer brother had damn fine ears!

Axis is the best. Experienced has terrible production, and his
tone wasn't grand. Electric Ladyland is too long.
