Condolences and commiseration, Grundlebik. Had a Suburban some
years back that blew out its radiator---went to the scrapyard
and got one, put it in, it leaked. Pulled it out, returned it,
got another one, got it partway in before I realized it wasn't
going to fit properly (slight difference in mounting bosses).
Yanked THAT one, took it back, got a refund, went to my buddy's
Car Quest store like I should have in the first place and bought
a new one. Wasn't that big a price difference. Now I can swap a
90s Suburban radiator out in 30 minutes!
Recently had to replace the starter in my current '98 GMC
pickup. Getting it out was no problem. Took it to aforementioned
buddy's store and got a rebuilt one. He pointed out---I hadn't
noticed---that the lug for the solenoid hot wire was still
attached (but not the wire---obviously broke off). That may have
been what shut it down, but it (the starter) had been ZINGing
for a few days---turn key, starter spins but does not engage
flywheel---and it rattled when I took it off (busted bearing) so
it was toasted anyway. SO. Holding it in place while aligning
the bendix and getting a bolt started turned out to be beyond my
strength/endurance! So very frustrating! My wife's co-worker
Jessie's husband Dan (lotta Dans in this post) helped me out,
got it in and hooked up. Didn't want to take any pay but
convinced him to take $40 for coming to my rescue. Whole job
cost me about $125 and I made a new friend. Starter works great,
truck starts immediately. WIN.

I had a similar rad incident on a 78 Monaco, back in the day.
Not only did I do the rad twice, I also ended up doing the water
pump twice because the first one didn't have the impeller
installed properly on the shaft. It made a helluva racket as it
rubbed on the block. ;D
Glad you got your starter done. Nothing like laying on your back
holding up a heavy thing while trying to get a bolt started.
That's usually when the sweat starts running into your eyes,
too. If possible, I try to do that kind of work out at the
Dinklefarm. Not always doable, but my brother has a hoist. Much
more civilized!

So, I pulled the passenger door apart to replace the handle.The
internet experts told me it's a common mid 90's GM weak point.
I pulled it apart enough to replace the handle, but there was
nothing wrong with it. Okay, fine - must be the latch, methinks.
Pulled a whole bunch more crap off the door and removed the
latch (thanks, YouTube!).
I put the latch in the vice and start pulling and pressing on
linkages, and the damn thing works perfectly in spite of
numerous attempts to get it to fail. I decided I'd replace the
latch anyway. Then I phoned and found out they wanted $250 for a
new latch. :o The whole truck's worth maybe $2000. ;D
I put the old one back in. I believe bro has a 95 sitting in the
boneyard. Pretty sure the cab is all there, and I can steal the
latch. If not, I'll try a wrecker or a pick your own part place.
So far, the old one works fine, but I'm pretty sure I'm not done
with this. >:(

A country boy always finds a way. I’ve hit plenty of pick a
parts and junkyards in my time to extend the life of machines in
my time as well. Taken good parts off lawnmowers and saved and
reused them as well.
Love guys like you that refuse to give up on a machine.
Just this week I did a favor for a customer that involved our
shop boneyard. A 4 cylinder compressor had started leaking
refrigerant out of the electrical terminal plate on same. Had a
core at the shop that the piston had dropped in a couple of
years ago. Took the terminal plate off it and swapped them out.
Saved them $800.
