we seem to get guitar-centric here, but I think Dave-Indigo
could really rock this one out.

Oh Dave could mos def rock that one. I've never seen that clip
before. Leon with ducktails...Who'd a thunk it? As long as I can
remember he has the Master of Time and Space look...With the
long hair and the flowing beard.
Man that Okie could tear it up though..He could also do it slow
and soulful...I got to see him live back in the seventies, on
his own tour after the Mad Dogs and Englishman bit with Joe
Cocker, and he blew the roof off the place....He could tear up a
Les Paul too...
RIP Leon.
Great post Luke...

I was diggin Leon back around 1971 when I suppose he gained name
recognition with Mad Dogs etc. I liked the highly stylized way
he was playing at the time. I think he maybe split piano duty
in Mad Dogs with a guy named Chris Stainton. Not sure.
I saw Leon in Orlando playing a free concert (I'm sure he was
paid by some local and corporate sponsers). I"m guessing 6-8
years ago. They drove him up onto stage in a golf cart and he
had a fancy walking stick of some sort. He seemed frail then.
I read or heard someplace that he was a part of the Shindogs -
the house band on the ABC Shindig R&R performance show. I think
Glenn Campbell was too. It could have had alternating musicians
depending on other gigs.
I have to say (I always like to call 'em as I hear 'em) that I
didn't like Leon's heavily stylized singing on "High Wire" ("I'm
up on a high wire"). I think of him as more of a mover and
shaker behind the scene. I like his singing in the video you
posted.
And I just now recalled I saw Leon around 1970 or 71. As I
recall he had Carl Radle playing bass (CR played on the Layla
album). I think Radle died an early death. Maybe alcohol was
related. I remember when I lived in Greenville SC around
1992-1995, he was coming to a local venue. I didn't go see him,
but read a short local promo interview. Leon talked about
having a problem in his earlier days with stage fright. I guess
the studio was more to his liking.

I loved Carl Radle's loping bass style..He played behind the
beat a lot which is a neat trick to do, and still stay in the
pocket.
.Leon Russell, a fellow Okie, blamed Eric Clapton for Carl's
death in part. He said Carl was heartbroken when Eric replaced
him at bass in his band...I want to say with Nile Rodgers. I
haven't Wiki'ed him but I think Carl died of Alcohol and drug
fueled suicide.

I used to look at the photo snapshots on the inside of the Layla
album. I think there's one of CRadle lying down someplace with
holding a bottle to his mouth. Of course I remember learning
later that Clapton was doing heroin around the time of the
Dominoes. I remember learning that around the time of "I Shot
the Sheriff" Clapton was regularly drunk. Amazing that his
music was so good in spite of all this. Maybe he stopped short
of fucking up his music - it takes some time to do.

When "461 Ocean Boulevard" was recorded, Eric had only recently
kicked a nasty heroin habit...Which he replaced with alcohol.
Sorta like Keith Richards....Except Eric got and stayed sober.
Keef still rolls with Jack Daniels, and he seems bulletproof.
