Finally getting started

...on this year's garden prep work. Got a lot to do.
Cindy and I have been out raking. Filled four 55-gallon drums
out of two garden beds. Our regular garbage collectors have
suspended yard waste pickup during the quarantine; luckily the
park has a maintenance yard where I can add them to an existing
BIG compost pile. I usually pull them down there (~1/8 mile) two
at a time in my big garden wagon, but all 4 tires have gone flat
over the winter and I'm not getting the compressor out just yet.
Pickup truck it is. Going to pick up my neighbor Judy's 8 or 10
bags of leaves on the way.
Judy gave me a pair of those heavy rubber gloves with hard
plastic claws on the right hand fingers. Darn handy for dealing
with leaves!
51 sunny degrees now (10:20AM), sposeta go 60 today. Might have
to get out my summer-weight bib overalls!
Okay, break's over, back at it. No worries, I'm going at it
slowly and resting often. Keeping the BP down. I get fatigued so
disappointingly easily---but I am thoroughly enjoying it. Hoping
to get this mostly done today. Tomorrow I'd like to get going on
building new planter boxes.

More like a few, but sure!
Didn't get as much done yesterday as I'd hoped. Winterlong
idleness has made me even wimpier than usual---but I'm easing
back into it. It'll come. We DID get 90% of the front of the lot
raked up and leaves dumped. I'm happy with it. Cindy was a BIG
help! My gal is nobody's slacker :-*
Looks like a good chance of some light rain this morning, so
probably won't make much progress until it dries out. So it
goes.

Rain has stopped, 68 degrees but everything's wet. Don't feel
like picking up soggy leaves.
Guess I'll pull out the compressor and air up the tires on the
big garden wagon, dump wagon and hose reel cart. Maybe work on
another project---got the frame, axle and wheels from a bicycle
kid-hauling trailer (the nylon parts were trashed from UV
exposure). Going to bolt a small ice-fishing sled to that (you
guys don't know what that is, do ya?) and fabricate a handle
from some aluminum angle stock I've got laying around. Make a
handy lil light-duty cart, maybe 100 lbs capacity.
I never did get that damned rototiller started last year. Better
go ahead and pull the carburetor, it's certainly all
engunkulated by now. Actually, I did all my tilling by hand last
year with a manure fork and a spade, and it worked fine. Maybe I
don't need to burn dinosaurs for garden work at all. That would
please me greatly.

Gray drizzly morning, <40o, forecast high of only 45o today.
Staying indoors, I guess.
Aired up all those tires yesterday. Bike trailer's holding. One
tire on the hose reel cart was hissing---flat. The garden wagon
and the dump cart have two flats each. Cheese whiz rice! Gonna
get some of that slime goop and take care of this once and for
all.
If it ever dries out, I plan to finish the raking and build
about 10 new planter boxes. Two courses of 1x6 screwed to 2x2s
in the corners. OD 2'x4'. Might have to buy some more soil to
fill them---glad I bought a pickup---local landscape supply has
cheap garden soil, half compost half loam.
Lots to do.

Too bad you don’t live closer. The Lad could deliver all that
stuff to you, and be delighted to lend a hand.

Nice :)
I've got everything but the soil and the tire slime. Got the
lumber and screws. It would be nice to have a young feller
around to help, fer sure!

He’d like nothing better. Messing with soils and plants are his
passion. That, and helping folks out. Being raised by a couple
of old folks, he says he can talk to older people easier than he
can people his own age.

When I get the boxes built, I'll have a fairly big chore of
mixing compost and soil to fill them (what I already have on
hand). I used to have a strong young feller who helped me a lot,
but as time has gone on he's become busy with work and a young
family, just doesn't have time anymore. I'm good with all that,
just as it should be. So I'll do it myself, a bit at a time.
Just wish the weather would cooperate! It's been either wet or
cold with a couple real nice days in between. Yesterday we had
sun then hail then sun then rain then snow. It's 31o right now.
Sheesh!
