George Martin said if there wasn't a Petsounds, there wouldn't
       be Sgt. Pepper.
I bought Petsounds when I was a sophomore in high school because
Radiohead cited that album as a huge influence on them. So, I
ended up buying their discography from Surfin Safari to Surf's
Up over the next few months. I was obsessed! My third album,
Sherman's Dead, was an attempt to create my own Petsounds
(failed), and I wrote a song about Brian on my fourth album.
But even after Brian went crazy and withdrew from the band, they
       put out some good stuff.
Did you know two black guys joined the band in the seventies?
Blondie Chaplain, who sang Sail On Sailor, joined the Rolling
       Stones touring band in 1997.
Glen Campbell not only played guitar on several Beach Boys
songs, including some on Petsounds, he filled in Brian's
bass/vocal duties on a tour before they hired Bruce Johnston.
Ironically, Dennis Wilson is the most popular solo artist of the
band. A lot of Brian's stuff is either ignored or panned. Carl
had two decent solo albums, and Bruce's was laughable. Mike
released two albums full of covers that were so poorly received
       he never rereleased them.

Pet Sounds was an incredible ground breaking album.
I kinda liked the Beach Boys story made for TV
man the Wilson's dad was a Prick-Dick of the highest magnitude.
i never liked their surfing shit..I could not relate at the
       time..but now I can.
Surfin' Surfari mentions Rincón..where my place is in PR..
They had a large Surfing competition there in 1969 ?
So many West Coast Gringos came over to surf and a whole
shitload never went back to Los Unidos Estados..
You can see them walking around with their pony tails, Greatful
       Dead Tees and huaraches.

The 1st 45 RPM I bought at age 10 was "I Get Around". I still
like that song and "Don't Worry Baby". I may try learning "DWB"
       this week (on vacation).
I lost interest in the Beach Boys. In my view Brian Wilson was
carrying the creative load all alone. At least after the surf
music period. But I do love "Wild Honey" and "Darlin'" . I
love the singing. It sounds to me like he (Dennis Wilson maybe
?) is singing at the upper limit of his vocal range but hitting
       all his pitches.
What would the Beatles (my beloved - I'm a UniBeatlian you know)
have been with 3 great harmony singers and only ONE strong
creative/inquisitive/curious force in the band ? They might
not've be so great. And George H grew into the role of being
worthy of Beatlehood. John (in my view) grew into the role as a
youngster growing up with Paul. He grew out of that
post-Beatles with sloth and partying (during the time in L.A.
drinking with Nilson and all of that shit). In my view of
       course.
       I"ll go away now.

Dennis had a raspier voice after Brian left. "Little Bird" and
"Be Still" from Friends are good examples. Mike adopted a less
nasal baritone style as well. It was Carl who sang "Wild Honey"
       and "Darlin."

hey buck, for a young blood, you certainly are a font of
excellent Intel on the Beach Boys..
Makes me want to fuck you even more..
Ya know, taented as he was, I always thought Mike Love was
socially, a big fucking jerk off.
Doing that silky little 'Pony' dance like most white boys used
to do back in the day..
But, when I really learned to detest him is when he went off at
the RRHF induction sarcastically calling the BEATLES those 'Mop
       tops'
pure fucking rancor, pure unadulterated jealousy.

Mike has stuck his foot in his mouth so many times he looks like
a circle most of the time.

Instead ofhis foot in his mouth, he should have been force fed
the tallywackers of John Paul George and Ringo all at once..plus
made to lick that rancid old Sushi twat of Yokos right
       afterwards..
       kinda like Surf and Turf
Four Englishmen's 'Bangers' and one smelly rancid Japanese Twat.

Mike Love was once a premier frontman, as goofy as he may seem
in retrospect. When Mick Jagger and others came along, he was
out. No one wanted to hear his nasal crooning anymore. He became
so embittered about losing credibility to these newcomers, and
his legacy never recovered. Until the nostalgia craze in the
late seventies and eighties, Mike was trying on many different
hats. He got heavy into transcendental meditation, grew long
hair and a beard, and was no longer the front man. Just another
       member without any musical talent.
Brian was the victim of his own psyche. Their father's abuse
didn't affect Carl as adversely. Dennis was more into drinking
       and marrying cousins.
Al Jardine was the voice behine "Help Me Rhonda," and tried to
steer the band in a more Folk/Blues direction. They were all
tugging the band away from one another until it got really bland
and unrecognizable. When Brian came back, things got worse.
I do think Keeping the Summer Alive is a good record, and
       Brian's Love & Mercy is a trip.

Regarding Mike Love, I saw the Beach Boys on "The View" maybe a
year ago or so. I was amazed how good they sounded doing "Good
Vibrations" live on the show. Then when the song had that
slowed down break and Mike Love comes in solo - he was singing
out of tune. I figured they were using some pre-recorded tracks
to sing along with. That and some younger guys in the band who
       can still sing in tune.
I really have to listen to Pet Sounds. One theory I have about
the inventiveness of the Beatles vs that on the Beach Boys
       recordings:
The Beatles had free rein when it came to trying things out in
the studio. Paul could try out pretty much any idea for a bass
line on any given song. Carol Kaye on the other hand was on the
recording because she was a great player AND she "could invent"
       - her terminology for being able to come up with an interesting
bass line. BUT I figure these studio guys were there because
they could get the job done quickly and on demand. If Carol
Kaye started changing her playing from one verse to another,
she might've be accused of showboating - showing off. She had
bosses. And so on for the rest of the musicians. This is only
       my theory.

Brian is a good bassist, but he writes on piano. He wanted his
studio musicians to follow his compositions, and Kaye may claim
she could've improved it (she's notoriously opinionated), Brian
had his vision and it wouldn't be the same album without it.
The Beatles were a completely different band with a unique
dynamic. Did it make them better? Sometimes. I still think Sgt.
Pepper is a good album but overrated. Their Petsounds was Abbey
       Road.
