Leon Russell live in studio - The Homewood Sessions
By: indigo_dave Date: June 11, 2019, 7:38 am

Dr. John and Johnnie Johnson (of Chuck Berry fame) recently
died. Leon Russell was another one of R&R's great piano
personalities. I recently came across this live studio
concert (it was reportedly recorded over the course of 6 hours
at a studio at Homewood and Vine in Los Angeles). I never liked
Leon's singing - but for me he was a wizard behind the curtain.
And he wrote some well crafted songs ("Delta Lady" and
"Hummingbird are a couple").
I think I came to be aware of Leon from the Mad Dogs and
Englishmen album by Joe Cocker. What I love about this album is
the late 1960's hippieish vibe.

Relating to that same period, I read a piece about Jakob Dylan
and (I think) Andrew Slater coming out with a documentary about
the Laurel Canyon creative music scene circa 1967. This was my
coming of age period musically speaking. I'm actually planning
on taking the trouble to see it at the local independent
arthouse theater.

I got to see Leon in like 71. He was the headliner in a show
down here. He was red hot at the time. His tour with Joe Cocker,
the film with same, and of course his Star turn in “The Concert
for Bangladesh”. He rocked the roof off the joint, both on
piano and guitar, with that Memphis via Tulsa groove he made his
own. I always loved his singing style.

That Laurel Canyon flick looks great! All those bands influenced
me as well Dave. Hell, all those bands shaped the soundscape
that was your and my musical youth period. Will definitely have
to catch that film.
It's interesting that Jakob Dylan is involved in it. Being as
his father's music influenced all the musicians being referenced
in the film.
Especially the Byrds. Their first Number One was a Dylan song.
Throughout their career they kept recording Dylan covers, Pete
Seeger covers...They practically invented folk rock on their
own. Tom Petty was also heavily influenced by Dylan AND The
Byrds. I wonder how it must have felt for Petty... to end up
being in a band with Bob Dylan, George Harrison, Roy Orbison,
Jeff Lynne.....Even though Petty was a songsmith and rockstar in
his own right, and had been for a while....I mean.....Shit!

The one thing I remember from some Tom Petty interview snippet
was some comment on resisting treating Dylan as "Your Bobness".
In other words, resisting treating him like some sort of human
God, like many others did.
