       Fender Bass VI
By: AJ Date: June 9, 2019, 10:35 pm
       ---------------------------------------------------------
...You old pluckers remember them don't you? I played one in a
music store back in the late 60's but didn't have the scratch
for one. Squier has reissued a model now. Started out at like
$600 but are now down to $429....I'm kinda gassed for one
myself...Even though I have no idea where Squiers are even made
now. I've got a Peavey P-bass clone, it gets the job done...But
small hands and old age make it a lot of work. The bass I
started out with was a Silvertone/Danelectro. it had a really
narrow, slender neck. The Fender/Squier does as well.
I DO have a birthday coming up....If the wife's back surgery
goes well and doesn't break the bank I may start dropping some
       subtle hints. >:D

first runs were made in China
as of 2019 the Squier Bass VI are crafted in Indonesia
the first runs are supposedly better

I've yet to find any serious reviews on them...The vintage ones
       are ridiculously expensive.

Phil did a review when the MIC Squier was released
  HTML https://www.harmonycentral.com/expert-reviews/squier-vintage-modified-bass-vi
I played one and have been on the lookout to buy a used one and
then some 5 years ago I coincidentally stumbled upon a 1958
       Danelectro 6 string bass
the Squiers do not intonate perfectly, the bridge saddles are
too short to finetune the intonation
sounds Ok first 7 frets but once past 12th fret it sounds out of
tune, still playable if you use single string lines, tick tock
and the pickups are nothing special, sounding a bit shrill
but I tested it on a guitar amp, supposedly a bass amp works
       best with the VI
but build quality, finish and hardware are all decent
       fun instrument

Thanks for the feedback Bieke. I value your opinion on all
things musical. I wonder if the shortcomings of the instrument
could be taken care of some aftermarket saddles and pup’s?

hmmm---the design of that bridge doesn't give much adjustment
room for intonation tweaks, does it?
pickups could be a bit of a challenge---optimized for lower
freqs in a single-coil sized package
       interesting

there were a lot of cool songs that featured the Fender VI. Jack
Bruce used it a lot in Creams early days. The Beatles used it.
The solo on Glen Campbell's "Wichita Lineman"...Lots more. Of
course I do not expect this recent reincarnation of the
instrument to be anything close to the original.
It's essentially a Baritone guitar...But I want for bass. The
slender neck and short scale is what I'm after.

Slender necked, short scaled basses are available, ya know---

I don't know what you do or don't know!
       Now here's a dozen jumbos...Git to sucking! ;D
Ya know, I haven't even looked for any. I got triggered by the
Sweetwater ad for the VI and they totally owned me... ::)

Consider, I've been a guitar nerd since the 60s---
BTW, saw your post at TOOJ---fyi, I've been off my HC ban for
weeks, just don't post there much anymore, every word I say is
microscrutinized by Emperor Phil and I've had a bellyful of him!
       Look at Fender's Mustang.
