People decided this part of ‘Murcia would be a good place to
settle. It’s 6:30 in the morning and already 78.
Ugh
:P

tequila?

While that might have proved a panacea for some...I just dunno
friend. When this part of Tejas got invaded by White 'Muricans,
it was a swamp basically. This was before electricity and A/C.
While winters are generally mild...Summers are abjectly tropical
and skeeter filled. In a word...SUCKS. Miserable, without A/C
and cold water, an absolute Hell on Earth. I did not know there
were schools with A/C until my family moved to the Spring Branch
area when I entered 9th grade. None of the Houston schools were.
Another observation....I've lived my entire life here in the
Greater Houston area, with the exception of 5 formative years in
West Texas when I was just a sprout.
I've noticed a distinct change in the weather patterns here.
Used to be, summer was, like now, Hot and Humid...But there was
regular rainfall. Literally, during the summer, it would rain
nearly every afternoon. While it intensified the humidity, it
would also offer a respite from the hot temps.
Over the last ten years, summers are dry affairs. Unless there
is a tropical storm or hurricane. Summers are starting later,
but hotter, and lasting longer. It used to start getting hot in
April. Now it's not until May.....But it's hot all the way to
mid December. It used to be we'd start getting breaks from the
heat Mid September.....Not anymore.
I've run out of patience with people that deny Global
Warming/Climate change.

we have regular visits by flocks of ibix which are tropical...
it was a rare but not unheard of thing to see one or two strays
during the summer but now, theyre regular fixtures around the
ponds... the line for tropical/subtrop is just south of lake
okeechobee from vero beach to bradenton... theyre about 300
miles north of where they used to be.

Thing is, only thinking people take into account the shifts in
climate are having on the other species that unfortunately, for
them, have to share this sphere with us. The deniers are also
ignorant of the price other species are paying for their
headlong race toward extinction. Gleefully, willfully ignorant
at that.
We had just about killed off all our larger migratory
birds, plus our raptors and several others, with DDT.
Now, I'm pleased to report that sandhill cranes, egrets, blue
and green herons, several hawks, even a nest of baldies nearby
have all recovered and returned in healthy numbers.
Some local idjits want to have a sandhill crane hunting season,
fer crine out loud.

They have a limited Sandhill crane season down here. They refer
to the birds as "The Rib Eyes of the Sky", and their meat is
highly prized.
I've heard they're tasty but I don't believe we have
sufficient numbers to justify a hunting season.
I love it when they fly low over my house---their call sounds
prehistoric (Cinny & I call 'em pterodactyls) and the whooshing
of their wings---!

I love birds...Period. I feed and water them. The only bird I
ever shot was a wild turkey. I smoked it, and it was tough and
stringy, and not a little gamey.
Haven't been moved to hunt them or any flying thing since.

Lately I've been lucky to catch some fledgling birds being
educated in my front yard. One young woodpecker has been
attempting to figure out the shelled sunflower seed feeder.
He's slowly been improving his feeder technique. Also seen the
beak to beak parent to youngster feeding. Titmouse, woodpecker
and cardinal. I watch this stuff while playing the piano in my
living room and looking out the window.
