       Band in a Box
By: AJ Date: March 17, 2019, 3:58 pm
       ---------------------------------------------------------
Thinking about buying Band in a Box. I've been watching videos
on it for quite a while. I know our good friend Dinkleberg has
been using for years with really outstanding results. I'm
thinking it might give me the kick in the ass I need musically.
Of course it's a DAW....But it looks like the learning curve on
it might be something I can deal with in the long term.
I just hate to spend money.
I hope Dinks will be available for stupid questions on a semi
       regular basis. ;D

Well, I dunno about "outstanding results", but it is a useful
piece of software for a fellow like me who doesn't play any
rhythm instruments worth a damn. ;D
BiaB has some DAW functions, but they are somewhat limited when
       compared to a real DAW.
That being said, it does function very well when used in
conjunction with a DAW. Once I get my backing track sounding the
way I want, I can just drag the tracks across into Reaper for
       further massaging.
BiaB also comes with RealBand, which is much more like a DAW,
with the additional functionality of being able to generate
parts just like BiaB. I don't really know much about RealBand,
but some users over at the BiaB forum swear that once you get it
figured out, you may not use BiaB again.
Speaking of the BiaB forum, it is well moderated, and populated
by an extremely friendly and helpful group of enthusiasts,
including PGMusic staff and the owner of the company/inventor of
       the software, Dr Peter Gannon.
BiaB has its quirks, but imo, the learning curve is well worth
       it.
PGMusic puts BiaB for pc on sale every December, usually to the
tune of 40% off. I purchased the basic package the first year,
just to get a feel for the software without spending a lot of
dough. The next year I got a decent upgrade price with 40% off
       on top of that.
If you go the BiaB route, I will help you whenever I can, Jim.
       :)

I bought it and downloaded it and the megapacks of stuff that
came with it. It came with the Real band thingamabob as well.
But that was Sunday night and I haven't had hardly anytime to
       actually utilize it yet.
May mess with it some tonight, but the little time I did spend
with it, I think I put all the real instrument stuff in the
wrong directory and may have make some file moves.
I'm pumped up about it though.

Wow. After reading your reply, I cranked up RealBand. Wow. It
seems far superior to Bib on my first taste. it is, in essence I
think, a DAW. Of course this is based on little more than an
hour. I think I may be judging it on the fact that all the
tracks i generated were real musicians instead of the general
midi sounds in BiB. Seems to operate the same way in that you
input chords, choose a style, then choose a band type. it has a
mixer screen you can pop up, but I can't seem to get it to move
over to my left hand monitor to create a bit more real estate.
But I can totally see where this is going to be a really useful
tool for working out songs. I'm excited!
I've got a lot of lyrics laying around I'd like to get out
there.....I'd like to get a tune wrapped around them and
hopefully get some DinkleSax on them as well...Maybe even some
IndigoKeys....Some Bieke...Some Impish. Even some Dudely gongs!
       I'm pretty pumped!

       Glad you're pumped, Jim.
I suppose if you're going to have to learn a new software
package anyway, you may as well invest the time in RealBand, as
it does seem somewhat more versatile, and looks slightly more
       "modern" than BiaB.
When it's properly working, BiaB can also work with RealTracks.
If all you can do in BiaB is MIDI, then it's likely BiaB is
confused as to the location of your RealTracks folder.
Best of luck, and here's to hoping for many new tunes out of
       your studio. :)

Ok Dan...I'm back to monkeying around with BiaB after a long
       period of nothing musical.
If you want to take the time...I'd like to know what your work
stream is with it. Like where do you start?
