       My demos in progress
       By: indigo_dave Date: July 15, 2017, 3:58 pm

Seemed appropriate for a new thread. I'm not looking for
compliments or criticism - although you can. I'm working these
out, I suppose by rote. That means that I'm playing them over
and over. I have to coordinate the bass part with the right hand
rhythm chords and the vocal phrasing. I've gotten much better
at this since fooling with it over the last maybe 3 years. I
gave up on finding local musicians so I'm covering the bases on
       my own.
       In progress.

I liked them both Dave. "Message", I liked best. Liked the
approach to the song you're taking. Only thing I'd suggest is
maybe dropping the "O's". You're not really playing the song
reggae style, and the "o's" sound a little out of place. Other
than that I really, really, like the demo.
"Layla" I realize is a work in progress. ;)
Do keep posting demos of whatever you're doing...They are always
an interesting listen and it's been cool seeing you evolve these
       tunes.

I'm on the flip with AJ..
I can't get a grip on a piano oriented 'Message in a Bottle' at
time.. It is a guitar driven song for me,
not saying it won't grow on me in the future as you work your
       magic.
On the other hand..Layla, with those beautiful chords, seems to
lend itself to the keys..I think your vocals are more intimate
and apropos on Layla..I think you were 'groovin' ( pardon the
cliché) on the vox and keys on that track..

Thanks for listening guys. It dawned on me that Message IAB
has the repeated 4 chord thing I criticized. But then it has a
       chorus that does a I IV V
In Dmin, the key I'm doing it in it's :
Dm Bb C Gm repeat over and over
       then the chorus has:
Bb Eb F Bb Eb F Gmin Eb Gmin Eb Gmin Eb Dmin Bb
repeated a bit - if I have it straight. I'm doing broken up
chords much of the time then at times I'm playing block chords -
in the R hand I mean. I'm thinking of a Jamaican Ska sound and
feel at times. If I'm understanding (actually recalling) what
the style sounds like. I'm trying to monkey with the vocal
phrasing. I read a review in Stereo Review magazine circa 1978.
The guy said he liked how Willie Nelson monkeys with the
phrasing. I like that. I actually like to picture Louis
Armstrong - the young one around 1928 (I have some recordings on
my phone). His horn playing and vocals were from a similar
place. I think I read that he began singing to save his lips -
       give them a break.
I've had a toke or two. I read that AG Sessions wants to
       demonize marijuana. Fucking backwards.
I heard on an interview show today an ex-security agency guy.
Maybe CIA , can't remember. He said there was a pro gun group
formed in Russia and organizing with fringe right conservative
gun lovers here. The non-elite can't fucking own guns in
Russia. But they're organizing with gun groups here. We're in
       strange times.

How funny/cool. Luke is the Man when it comes to 2nd brit
invasion rock, has been playing "Message" with bands for years.
I played "Layla" with bands for years..Not well, but still.
I played "Message' as well, and it's dear to my heart as
well....But "Layla" more so I guess. I'm sure Luke has tackled
       "Layla" before as well.
It's just funny/cool that we came out on flipsides on your
       demoes.
And thanks for the breakdown on the chord changes Dave. I find
       that stuff interesting and educational.

One great case of people trying different approaches to a given
song are the Beatles. Some of their rehearsal recordings, some
with only audio. I heard Lennon playing with (I like the word
"sketching") "I Want Your". It was totally different than the
final version. It had an electric piano IIRC - I presume Billy
Preston. They were doing a riff , piano and voice together. I
kind of liked it. Just took a look on YouTube and didn't find
       it.
But I did find something fun
  HTML https://youtu.be/FW5mhG927QU
I've done "Since I Saw Her Standing There" many times as a
       shuffle.

I'm going to try to get another recording of "Message". I
listened back and sometimes cringed on some high notes.
I know I'm obsessing. You can ignore this
