Looper Thread !
By: indigo_dave Date: July 13, 2017, 7:34 pm

I'm starting a looper thread. Without loops. Actually I've made
about 8 (I think) simple loops. I plan to play them through a
speaker and record them with my portable Olympus LS-100 - for
illustration purposes so you can hear what I'm talking about.
I've been thinking about the possibility of using hand made
loops.
I'm wondering about the possibility of dumping the Wave file
loops onto a laptop. And somehow integrating it with a digital
piano, creating a fuller sound. Something closer to a "band".
But sounding authentic.
Just thinking. I'll post some recordings later.

There are 8 patterns, but 2 or 3 are cloned variations. The
pesky metronome bell sound is in much of the recording. I
haven't figured out how to disable it on playback. I need it of
course for recording. I'm pondering the possibility of loading
the loops on a laptop or maybe tablet with whatever software
would be appropriate. And using a foot switch to start and stop
it. I also have this idea of having a 2nd person who plays
complimentary percussion. I don't want to try and mimic a
conventional R&R drum set. But I would like to find ways of
creating a groove that makes people want to dance.
The last pattern - Pattern8 is 3 tracks of hand claps. I'm not
sure it works well. I may try adding 2 more tracks of hand
claps. But my vision isn't to be a live looper, it's to create
some unique percussion parts. Something a little bit different
that hopefully perks up some ears.
After all I can dream.

When I think of Looper, I think of the little story KT Tunstall
told about using her looper and recording live at a
concert..(Black Horse and the Cherry Tree)
She said there was always some J.O. in the audience, knowing
the song was being recorded, who would scream or whistle during
her initial loops so that it would become a permanent fixture in
the song.
Kinda like the same assholes that scream, whistle, yell at an
acoustic concert.
It didn't happen

I happen to like that song. When my wife said she couldn't stand
it I said I rather liked it and she and the Lad both looked at
me like I was nuts. Well...Like I was more nuts than usual.

She sounds very good. One problem I'd have with her approach is
the guitar lick she looped. That limits her to playing guitar
chords that work with that tone. I noticed she seemed to play
just one chord with a quickly played 2nd chord, then going back
to the first chord. She chained herself to only being able to
play a couple of chords. In general, I would not do that. I
want the freedom to be able to alter the harmony (chord
changes). We're in a period where it's become very popular to
play music with only 2 to 4 chords played repeatedly - over and
over and over.
Not criticizing her performance, just the pop music trend of
simplistic limited harmony with no variation.
