Sat in at a jazz jam session last night...

There's a Tuesday night jazz jam session in Sanford, about 20
miles away. I decided to arrive early before the band started
so I could get my name on the list. I got up and played 4 songs
with them - 2 blues vocals (a couple of my fave Louis Jordan
songs) and "It Could Happen To You" and "Killer Joe".
Sitting in can be a joy or it can be frustrating. The keyboard
(a Yamaha CP model - nice) was going thru the PA and had a
monitor facing me on the stage floor. But behind me was the
guitar dude's guitar amp (the amp make was "Matchless"). I
couldn't hear myself adequately to make those instantaneous
judgements we all make when playing. So I ended up banging
more loudly in an attempt to hear myself better.
Saying all this may make it sound disastrous. It went OK. Its
just that losing control of one's sound and music can be a bit
frustrating. Oh well. Nothing ventured , nothing gained.

Matchless amps are prized "Boutique" amps. not sure if you can
       even still buy them.
Glad you had a good time though...Those pesky electric guitar
       players! :D

       Keyboards/ basses/ guitars/ horns can easily turn into a
battleground if there isn't a proper sound person to sort things
       out. :)

Really true. I'm thinking of looking into some other local jam
sessions. I saw something about an "acoustic jam". If any of
these have a digital piano (very doable these days) I could sit
in, in this format. I have started working on "Layla" and
"Message In A Bottle". I play and sing thru them, trying out
different keys when my range demands it. I'm slowly trying to
build a song list that could work in a little joint. If I make
       a practice recording, I'll share.

Message in a Bottle is a lovely song. :)
I used to sing it with my bar band in the 1980's playing those
stretched out guitar chordings and singing it in the same key as
Sting was a challenge...I can no longer sing it in that key..
I now do a solo version (like Sting did in The Policemen's Other
Ball) playing the slower version on my Fender Strat.
I am intrigued, wondering how it sounds played solo with
       keyboard?

"Layla" features Bobby Whitlock on some really great piano work,
plus his strong vocals. I can totally hear "Layla" as a piano
       number.
Like Luke, I'm intrigued about a piano version of "Message". The
last cover band I was in did a cover version of "Message". It's
hard capturing Andy Summers guitar tones and vibe to be sure. I
got closer on the lead flourishes than I did capturing the
       rhythm vibe.
But those two songs are some of my very favorite songs ever.

I'm able to sing the 1st verse of "Message" , but don't have the
phrasing for the 2nd and 3rd verses in my head. I have to
listen to it over and over several times.
With regards to "Layla", it's going fine. I just keep playing
thru it and singing, trying to get it imbedded into my that
motor part of my brain (isn't that the cerebellum ?). My 1st
priority as a "singer" is to try to sing in tune. I'm critical
(sometimes silently) about people singing out of tune - to me
that should be the minimum. My 2nd effort is to look for
interesting ways to phrase the lyrics - only sometimes. I like
to try to phrase lyrics differently sometimes.
Do you guys know the story about Jim Gordon stealing the "Layla"
piano solo from Rita Coolidge ? It's pretty well documented. Her
sister Priscilla even has the melody in a song with Booker T.
Jones (whom she was married to for some years). Jim Gordon
co-wrote the song with Clapton. Gordon's in prison for murdering
his own mother. So he's a thief AND a murderer.
