DAW's and Me

ARRRRGGGGHHHHH!!!
They drive me NUTZ!!!! I started out on a Commodore
64...Strictly a platform for recording MIDI stuff...I think the
name of the program was Super Sequencer. 8 tracks of MIDI
information. I had a Roland Juno 64 for a controller, and a
Roland D-55 Dr. Rhythm beat box. After countless hours, I
finally got the hang of inputting keyboard parts. Bought a sync
box and figured out how to trigger the beat box and the computer
to start playing all the stuff together, utilizing my 4 track
tascam sync cassette with one track striped to lock it all up.
Then i could add analog stuff on the remaining three tracks.
Eventually I upgraded my drum machine to a 505. All with a
C-64....Made a lot of recording that way...
Since i went the IBM clone route, computer wise...My output
musically dramatically dropped off. My original 486 based
computer did not even have a sound card...I eventually up graded
and got a Sound Blaster, but at that time, the computer
explosion time, I could not keep up, technologically, with
things. Eventually I got a new computer with a free version of
Cakewalk. It had a total of 4 audio tracks, but unlimited MIDI
tracks...By then, I didn't even have a keyboard.........
Fast forward.......Now I have Sonar, and Audacity....I've been
able to collaborate...With Dinks and Bieke on a few things...But
I'm still pretty much an idiot when it comes to DAW's

My first DAW was a Pentium based system, despite me having owned
computers since the early 80's. I built it out of parts I had
kicking around, and I ran a pirated version of Cakewalk (sorry,
Cakewalk dudes). Between that and my Yamaha PSR-3000 keyboard, I
cranked out 3 or 4 CD's worth of covers.
I run Reaper now (yes, I paid for it ;D), although life hasn't
left me much time nor the mental disposition to do much
recording lately.
Keep on plugging away at it, Jim. The more you use whatever
piece of software, the more comfortable/adept you become. Just
like singing or playing an instrument, using a DAW requires
practice. That being said, my DAW skills are marginal to
functional, at best. I have, however, learned a shitload from
YouTube tutorials.

ive tried several, then a friend that worked at the sound
kitchen snagged pro tools and every possible plug in... i made
a few tracks, but, for the time involved, i couldve learned to
play another instrument... i understand analog recording...

I feel ya. My personal output has been meager since my 4 track
died. Sonar has been a obstacle to creativity. 😪

i just ordered a centrance mixerface... has a micro sd
recorder on board, main recording outs are 32bit 192kHz, studio
quality pre’s and headphone amp... 4 in 6 out... boasting a 6
to 8 hour battery life and the pres are 6 dB quiter than my zoom
q8, and thats impressive! aluminium in its entirety and the
size of a cellphone... streaming, recording or live
production... xlr/hiZ combo inputs on two and 1/8” stereo...
48v phantom power, direct in for guitar or bass... 6
decibels quieter on the noise floor is a big fucking deal!
