       My amplifiers
       By: guest11 Date: February 3, 2019, 9:48 am
       ---------------------------------------------------------
       I don't play a lot of electric guitar---but I'm fascinated by
the instrument. And that necessitates amplifiers. I have a few.
First, my test amp. It lives on my workbench. Its function is
just to make sure my work WORKS. It's a Fender 15G cabinet with
an 8" speaker that has a Boss MG-10 head spliced into it.
My BIG amp is a 70s Silverface Bassman 4x10 combo. This thing is
a monster. Only 60W or so, but LOUD, and lotsa tones in it.
Gonna do some mods---needs a recap job, and I'm gonna modify the
tone stack in the bass channel to overdrive easier. The normal
channel gives me those Fender cleans that I love so much.
Got two Guytronix kit amps that I love. These I built myself.
One is a Gilmore Jr---it can be 1/2W or 2W, depending on the
power tube I use. I can get hot glass tone without blowing the
windows out of the house. The other is the Ardmore model. 5W
with a bit of a Vox chime to it. I run these through an old
Carvin tweed cabinet with two 12" greenbacks. They will push a
4x12 cabinet, no problem---plenty enough to gig the average room
       with.
Then my solid state acoustic amp. Carvin AG100D. Also my bass
       amp. 100W, 12" + switchable tweeter, onboard effects, 3
channels, very versatile. PA in a box that I can carry.
Plans are to build a tube reverb unit to go with the Guytronix
amps. Once life settles down a little bit (like THAT is gonna
       happen!).

Ya got me interested in the Guytronix amp kits....But :'( Their
webby sez no longer available! Watched a couple of UTubes demos
and 'twas impressed. Nice break up at higher gain settings. I
like soldering and electronics as well. Have built a few direct
boxes, snakes, etc. plus repairs on guitars, amps, even
       toasters. Lol...
MojoTone sells amp kits too, much lauded, much pricey.

just re-read your post about your amps.
You know, I remember seeing amps like your Bassman, But I never
played through one. I suppose my Super Reverb shared the 4X10
speaker config, but I'm guessing your Bassman had some
significantly heavier speakers in it. Plus my Super is only 45
watts. The Super always had a lot of bottom in it. Thing was, to
get it into overdrive territory I had to really crank it up. But
it had those Fender cleans going for it. I finally just relied
on pedals to get the breakup I was looking for. Until I got the
Marshall anyway. Then the Super was only for those sweet throaty
       cleans.
Sad note...I rolled it out of the closet the day after I got the
Tele from you. It blew a fuse...Then another. So i rolled it
back into the closet and plugged back into the Line 6. I got to
thinking about it and I really can't remember the last time I
even got it out of the closet. Previous to the Line 6, I either
used the SansAmp or the little Roland Cube 15. No matter.
Working or not, the Super has been mine since '76, she ain't
going nowhere, and she ain't for sale, even broke.

I’ve no experience playing those multiwatt amps. But I’ve read a
lot of reviews. I know the Boss Katana series of ss amps get
pretty high praise and you can get into one for about two fifty
for a 50 wast, that I think you can drop to 5 watts. Built in
       effects as well.

i pulled teh trigger on a lightly used origin 50... supposedly
a 50 watt plexi circuit with three different preamp stages so
you have 5, 20, and 50 watts, switchable, blendable two
channels.. master volume... the les paul was first and it
approached plexiness but dint quite convince me... underwhelmed
with the ovation as well... bummer. tried the tele and was
rather impressed! single coil/marshall was kind of a kick, so i
plugged into the fresher, straighter... its a strat with a flat
fretboard ... hot electrics 7 position blend, onboard 5
position gain... all my life im a gibson man... 59/61 les paul
gold top, mini buckers... hell, i may even unlock this
       tremolo...

I’ve had my Strat since ‘81. They can be bastards when want to
be. But when they are on when you are on...it’s a sublime
       experience.
Are you experienced? Have you ever been experienced? Well....I
       have...

this fresher is a strat type but the neck is completely
different... the fretboard is very flat, no radius... and its
narrow. this guitar was a dumpster queen... a friend found an
old guitar that someone threw away in s dumpster... it appeared
to have been “relic’ed” crudely and discarded. as a bit of a
joke i took it to my good friend and luthier, gary hudson. he’s
a guitar geek extraordinaire, and he filled in the gaps. and
the ditches/gouges, pickups, bone nut, proper hardware... a lot
of nitro cellulose and healthy helping of love massaged her back
to what has recently become my favorite fiddle. ok, favorite
electric fiddle... my taylor is going to be a hard act to
follow for all around favorite strings...
