Footwear!

Waddaya put on yer feet?
I prefer to be barefoot, and I am as often as I can. I like dirt
between my toes. But that's not always practical.
Summertime, I wear cheap $10 slip-on shoes when I have to go
somewhere. No socks. Only because I can't go a lot of places
barefoot.
Midseason, I got these suede chukka boots with waffle-stomper
soles I got at Goodwill for about $10. Light socks. They do the
job.
Cold weather, I got these Wellies. I think I gave $60 or so for
them. Kinda like cowboy boots but not really. Low heels, round
toes. Leather foot/synthetic shanks. Grippy soles. SnoSeal makes
them waterproof enough. Uninsulated. Thermax liner socks/thermal
oversocks when it's really cold. Easy on/off. Good for fairly
deep snow.
For extreme use, I have a pair of serious Sorel pac boots.
Heavily lugged rubber bottoms, leather uppers, thick felt
inserts, drawstring tops, rated to -30o. Glad I had them this
past week for clearing snow and firewood chores. Great for ice
fishing too. They were expensive---about $180.
When I was working, I wore low-cut Red Wing work boots. $100 or
so. Seriously good support. I can't fathom how some guys can
work in sneakers. My back would be toast by the end of the day.

At work, lace up Caterpillars,Wolverines, or whatever is on sale
at Academy when the old ones wear out.high ankle lace ups.
Around the house, usually a pair of New Balance seaks. Have a
pair for tromping around the yard or puttering in the garage,
and a pair for going out to wherever. Also a pair of top siders
when I'm to lazy to fiddle with laces.
Have a pair of Justin boots for going places where I'm wearing a
pair of good jeans. Nice restaurants, etc.
A pair of Wing tips for funerals....
Inside the house...I'm either barefoot, or just have a pair of
socks on.

You mention funerals.
I have a pair of black leather 3-hole oxfords that I can put a
mirror shine on (thank you, Uncle Sam). I haven't worn them in
20 years or more. I refuse to attend funerals---our death
rituals weird me out way too fucking much. I have documented
instructions that essentially say DON'T YOU DARE HOLD A FUNERAL
FOR ME. But I get it. Sometimes we are expected to do things.
I didn't mention my slippers. Elk leather outers/sheepskin
inners. This is Michigan, sweetie, yer feets get cold.

I live in a pair of OluKai flip flops most of the time. Of
course I live in Orlando so I'm not dealing with much below the
mid 40's (subject to change of course). I have some flip flop
socks that I sometimes wear in colder weather. I also have a
pair of Keens, those sandal shoe things. I use them for taking
walks. I have a pair of brown and a pair of black Keen slip ons
that I wear, mostly when I play a gig, when I need to be
slightly dressy.

Dave, if I lived where you live, I bet shoes would be the
exception 8)
I did live in the Tampa area for a while, but I was installing
satellite dish antennae, had to wear boots for support.
Barefoot, of course, when I wasn't working.
My girlfriend's (in those days) mother ran a contract post
office in one of the GARGANTUAN trailer parks in Sarasota---I
worked part-time with her---those were my Birkenstock days ::)
Gotta admit, these Michigan winters are becoming a bit of a
challenge as I get old and infirm. But extreme heat and humidity
push me into atrial fibrillation, and another stroke could well
put me over the edge.
Maybe I should move to Ecuador. Hot, but dry. Bet I could grow a
lot of food there :)

I don't have a problem going to funerals. They are for the
survivors of the deceased. The Deceased are already done with
this shit, completely unaware of who is attending the scripted
barbarity that is a modern funeral. The funeral is to make the
survivors feel others are felling their loss as well.
It's weddings I hate. I hate going to weddings. I avoid them as
best I can. I lie. I say I have things I can't get out of. They,
by and large are ridiculous displays of romantic crap that 50%
of the time result in painful divorces. Plus, I have to wear a
suit, and act like I'm so happy for the principals when most of
the time I'm thinking, "They ain't gonna make it".

One nice thing about funerals is that they are often sort of
family reunions in miniature. And if the family member was 80
or older, it's not so sad that they died. Many times it's a
relief because their last months or years were so miserable.
