Acoustic guitar I own
By: AJ Date: February 1, 2019, 9:37 pm

...That's right...Acoustic guitar I own. The one...And it's not
even a serious one at that. A Applause...And I'm not even sure
what model it is. It's a electric acoustic job with a built in
tuner. But it's not a bad little guitar....Have decided I do not
like bowl shaped guitars though. I had a early 70's Ventura, but
a Grand niece wanted to take up guitar and I gave that one to
her. Before that, I had a Takamine 12 string....Drove me batty
trying to keep it in tune so I sold it. Before that, the only
acoustic I had was a super cheap gut string job my folks gave
me, hoping I'd shut up about wanting to play guitar.
That's my whole acoustic history. You're welcome.

I've had so many acoustic guitars, I can't even remember them
all.
Currently, I have five. Cinny has one.
Hers is a Rogue (Musician's Friend house brand) model AE 100 NA.
I believe it's all laminated. Kind of a mini-jumbo with a
cutaway. Active pickup/preamp. Really quite nice for an
inexpensive instrument.
Found this very well built little all-solid-mahogany guitar in a
pawn shop years ago. 23 1/4" scale, O-type body, 12 fret neck.
No idea who made it. Paid $50 or $60 for it. Use it mostly for
open tuning fingerstyle stuff.
A Sigma model DM-12-4 twelve string came in for repairs about 20
years ago. Customer didn't want to pay my quote, so I offered
her $200 for it, and she took it. Needed a new nut and saddle.
Did that. Sounds like a dang piano. Put an LR Baggs Ibeam
passive pickup in it (run it through an outboard preamp/DI box).
Gigged with this guitar for years. Now it needs a neck reset,
and I've never done one. Freeman says he'll guide me through it,
so that's on the schedule.
Got a Yamaha acoustic. Can't recall what model---laminated
rosewood body, solid spruce top. It's out on loan to a buddy.
My hubcap guitar is a Regal Duolian. Chrome body, 10" cone,
HEAVY. Replaced the original cone with a Beard, replaced the
original (biscuit) bridge with an ebony-topped maple one. Put a
passive piezo pickup in it (again, outboard preamp/DI). Got it
set up so I can fret it or use a slide. I once had a
Gibson/Dobro model 33H (same basic style as this Regal) that
cost $1250---I've got $650 tops into this guitar and it beats
that Dobro hands-down.
My main acoustic is a Washburn USA model J20S. I believe this
model was made one year only (1994). Jumbo walnut body, cedar
top. LR Baggs Ibeam in this one too. One of the few guitars I've
ever bought new, and the one I've owned the longest. I will
never part with it. If I could only keep one of my guitars, this
would be it.
You know about the OM I'm having built.

How is it everybody finds these damn deals? WTF? Why is it I
don't have 20 fucking guitars? I mean, I don't know where I'd
put them...But still! I spent a few hundred on an amp late last
year, and I felt guilty about that.
I nearly went bankrupt about 5 years ago, and while I've turned
the corner, I'm still reticent to spend a dime I don't have to.

Since we had this convo, I got one more. My nephew was stationed
in Japan for a while (USN) and acquired an Applause model AE
248. He shipped it home to his mom, my sister, to store for him
several years ago. He got out of the Navy but stayed in the far
east---married a Chinese gal and now lives in the province this
whole fookin' covid thing started in. They have a cute lil
feller now. He teaches English and seems to do quite well at it.
SO. My sister asked him, a few months ago, what she should do
with the guitar. He said, "OH, that---give it to Unca DanO". So
it came to me. Thanks, Jeremy!
Shallow bowl, natural finish, cutaway, bound neck, epaulet
soundholes. Pretty decent fit and finish for a budget
instrument. I'm also no fan of roundbacks, but like they say,
chiggers can't be boozers. Tis what tis.
It has an onboard preamp and pickup, but for some reason that
unit was disassembled, the battery wires desoldered, and there's
a problem with the preamp assembly latching up in its cavity. I
have not repaired that, kinda doubt I will. It also is in need
of a truss rod adjustment (currently no relief/lots of strings
choking out). I couldn't find any access to the truss rod head
until I removed that circular plate on the back---AHA!
If I ever get around to it, I might do a rather radical mod to
this one---convert it into a reso. Cut a big round hole in the
top, fab up a soundwell, mount a cone with a spider bridge and a
hubcap, add a tailpiece and a tall nut. Dedicated slide guitar.
Like I said---keeps me off the street.

Upon further inspection, scratch that idea. I was inside it this
morning to do that truss rod adjustment, and it's obvious I
would have to violate the top braces' integrity to cut the
soundwell. I'm no acoustic engineer but I know better than that.
The truss rod is frozen. Reefed as hard as I'm willing to with a
t-handle hex wrench. Hmmm...

I will not fuck with a truss rod...anymore. I broke the one in
an old Kalamazoo bass neck. The bass is in my attic. Rotting I
guess. If you know how to fix a truss rod, I’ll ship it to you.

Just noticed your reply because of the way you posted it (I've
done the same thing a few times).
Yeah---if you're going to fuck with truss rods, you had better
know what you're doing. I've damaged them before. I managed to
get this one to move, a little, but I know when to stop. It
needs to loosen, so I'm willing to reef a bit more than if it
needed to be tighter, but still---if I round the nut socket,
it's all done. I'll wait a while and try again.
So you broke it? Is it spinning freely? Any parts come off? What
kind of adjuster does it use (hex, screwdriver, allen)? It might
be worth looking into.
