Random thoughts....
By: AJ Date: January 25, 2019, 11:46 pm

After a long week on call...The last call I took today was at
2:15 to a store in Lake Jackson. About 50 miles from where I was
at the time...Which was at a Taqueria in South Houston. Got
finished at 5:30...70 miles from home. Had a long drive, and in
the thick of friday Houston traffic. Ok...Not like I haven't had
this situation a thousand times before....I carry a MP3 player
in my console. Loaded with music.
Decided I'd just cue up Beatles songs and roll with that.....but
just the Pre-Pepper stuff.
Occurred to me...There is no way that the song "Run For Your
Life" could ever get airplay nowadays. It would be assailed for
it's sexist, violent, chauvinistic, lyrics. That band would have
been chastised ad infinitum by not only feminists, but by those
that wished to gain something by appearing to consider the
lyrics vile.
then i thought....What if R.Kelly, had written the lyric,
recorded it as a rap song, 20 years ago? In his heyday? Prolly
woulda been a hit for him. Prolly been mentioned in that doc
that showed what a prick he is.
The first 45 I ever bought was "Can't Buy Me Love".

That is indeed a hot topic. Applying the ethics of today to
things from the past. It's a losing proposition when imposed on
the past. And you could add to that, that John and Paul were
simply working to come up with content (Paul said once they were
writing for young girls - "I want YOU girl" , "I want you to
want ME girl" and on and on). They created different grooves,
different colors, and variations on messages to "girls" from one
song to another. Of course they matured and grew over those few
short years - and expanded. To me their body of work (The
Beatles) was approached similarly to character actors moving
from on type of role to another.
R. Kelly - I've got nothing to add about him. I caught an
extended NPR story some time back. It's good he's exposed.
My first 45 ? I Get Around backed by Don't Worry Baby. To me
they stand out as among the best Beach Boys songs. And I bought
a reissue (Smiley Smile and maybe something else included with
it) maybe 7-8 years back. I always liked (a lot) "Darlin" and
"Wild Honey" - sung by someone other than Mike Love. I love
the sound of the "guy" seeming to sing at the top of his vocal
range but still sounding solid vocally.
My first 33 1/3 vinyl album was "Something New" - something
Capitol Records put together sort of by slicing and dicing full
albums released in the UK. I think it's mostly some of their
weakest material (Beatles). But I also bought "The Beatles
Second Album" and it's some of my favorite stuff - a good
helping of R&B. But, I have several dozen favorite Beatles
songs.

I've still got a worn vinyl "Something New". "I want to hold
your hand" in German no less. I guess those years in Hamburg
dictated they learn a bit of the language.
My first LP was "The Beatles Second Album".
I still love all their music...But then you knew that about me.
:)
"I Get Around" still stands up, as well as a lot, if not all of
Brian Wilson's work.

I've heard you say this before....I've never heard of the band
though. Can you name some of their songs for me?
Did they do "Deep in the briny Deep"?
How 'bout "Down in the Vinegar Again"?
Was Cuke Gherkins their lead singer?

What a goofus you are.
Garlicky dill pickles are justification for their existence in
their own right.
They need no commercial equivalent to be significant. Garlicky
dill pickles stand on their own merits. If you don't understand
that, I fear there is little hope for you.
I grow Boston Pickling cucumbers. Been finessing my recipe for
pickling them for several years now (with Cinny's most valuable
input). Got it down to just about a science now. So don't you
mess with me, AJ, you know how I can get!

I stroked out in OCT11. It left us with no income and very
little savings. If not for local food banks, we would have not
eaten. We barely made the rent and utility bills.
It got better. We tried to pay the food banks back, but they
didn't want it. So we're trying to pay it forward. A good
portion of what we grow gets donated to the food banks. I
fantasize about having more land to be able to grow more and
donate more. I no longer care about personal benefit;as long as
I have a warm place to sleep and enough to eat, I'm good.
The fact that there are people going without enough to eat, for
whatever reason, offends me.

it's ridiculous that people go hungry. Just look at the copious
amounts of food in your local supermarket. I've spent my entire
career servicing the equipment in grocery stores.
What would really offend you is how much goes in the dumpster.
Especially produce....You could found and feed all the hogs on a
hog farm with what goes into one stores dumpster daily.
