Regarding an idea for a song, I sometimes stumble on a idea I
like while playing. The challenge is to record it. The next
challenge is to revisit that idea and work to do something with
it. Back around 3 years ago, I went thru a period of
writing/composing regularly. My daily goal was to simply
sketch a musical idea. Like a visual artist might sketch with a
pencil. Then at some point I would play thru several ideas and
see if I could possibly combine some of the ideas, rearrange
       them, or whatever.
I drifted away from this activity. I'm wanting to get back to
       this.

If you have a smartphone, you already have a digital recorder.
I used to use my phone quite a bit for scratch work when I was
       doing more writing/recording.
The Sony Audio Recorder App for Android is simple to use, and it
       works well.
       Dunno about the iphone world...
Might not works so well while driving, unless you have hands
       free Bluetooth.
Gotta be safe, you know. C:-)

I do not have a smart phone. I still have a Kirk to Enterprise
flip phone. My truck does have Bluetooth however, and I utilize
it for phone calls when I'm driving for the hands free aspect.
       Also for my MP3 player

Well, in that case a small pocket recorder would be an
inexpensive practical way to keep track of your ideas.

       I also wouldn't mind doing a little more recording/composition,
but lately, I have been more focused on live playing with other
musicians. I reconnected with an old musical pal from years ago,
and we get together once a week to drink some beers and try and
       sing some harmony.
We have a few Everly Brothers songs under our belt, and in
August we played at Mama D's retirement home in Dinkleville. It
was my first experience playing as a duo. Kinda scary... ;D
I hit a few of the local open mics now and then, too.
