How often do you have an idea for a song?
By: AJ Date: January 16, 2019, 9:05 pm
       ---------------------------------------------------------
...I'm just wondering. Having ideas, and going any further with
them is my downfall. Sometimes I'll get a melody idea, a rhythm
idea, a lyrical idea....The problem is, I usually get these
ideas when I'm driving. When I get home, there's people and
responsibilities to deal with....By the time I get up to "The
Bunker"...I log on and check my e-mail, maybe pay bills..Then
come here and check in...Then shower, then visit with the wife
and the Lad...Before long...Either the idea has slipped
away...or I'm too tired to act on it.
I'm thinking perhaps a small digital recorder might not be a bad
investment. Y'know...I don't understand why it seems I'm behind
a wheel when I get creative ideas. It's not listening to music
on the radio, or from my MP3 player. I usually listen to either
NPR or Pacifica when driving. Its when I'm not listening to
anything but the truck rolling down the road. With a small
recorder, I could hum a melody or a rhythm. Speak out the
lyrics....Someway to capture these ideas, good or bad I come up
       with.
When do you guys have musical ideas? How do you approach
       bringing them to fruition?

I sometimes get ideas when I'm playing the piano. Sometimes I
record the idea - often some little melody, chord sequence, or
some sort of groove. They might be something I like, but I've
come to believe that the real achievement is to get down in the
mud and wrestle with these ideas. In other words, a good idea
doesn't make a good song. I spend plenty of time at the piano,
but if I want to invent any new music, I have to spend time
crafting it. Trial and error is a big part of this process too,
       IMO.
I would recommend a little inexpensive portable recorder. I
just now did a quick Google search and you can get some models
for under $100. If you think you may bang it up, you could buy
       a little case.
And I listen to NPR pretty much all the time in my car. Love
       them.

Great observation about your process Dave. I looked at some
recorders last night myself. I think what I want it for doesn't
require a lot of fidelity...I'm thinking more along the lines of
       $50-$60.

remember how easy it was to use cassette tape recorders? i
       like analog stuff...

Cassette tapes were great when there were no alternatives. To
me the flaws are inherent to the physical construction - they
are little machines , and machines break down. None of my vinyl
albums ever "broke". Cassette tape can also stretch out or
break. On the other hand, if you don't lose the "tape" , you
always have the content. With digital recorders, you have to
keep track of your digital files. I think CD's were a nice
       improvement over vinyl. Many disagree.
What I really find silly is cassette tapes as an end user
medium. The guy who buys a cassette to listen to a band. Will
that cassette still "work" in 20 years ? I went to one of
Orlando's few remaining record stores recently. In addition to
having a sizable vinyl selection, they had a sizable section
with cassettes - albums on tape - for sale. Silliness. In my
       opinion.

The only songs I come up with are little ditties to tease Ruah
about being a boogie picker or a cootie bucket. Drives her
nuts!---and I usually steal the tune. Somebody else's melody.
       I'm such a whore---

There's only the 12 notes ya know...And the music we hear and
dig, that imprints upon our widdle noggins...It seems that all
of that has to creep into whatever we create. It seems
       impossible for it not to.
I think Dudely may be the only one in this tiny club here whose
music may be impervious to that creep to some extent. He has a
unique position in that he is creating his own genre.
I'll leave it to him to name it though. ;D

If you have a smartphone, you already have a digital recorder.
I used to use my phone quite a bit for scratch work when I was
       doing more writing/recording.
The Sony Audio Recorder App for Android is simple to use, and it
       works well.
       Dunno about the iphone world...
Might not works so well while driving, unless you have hands
       free Bluetooth.
Gotta be safe, you know. C:-)

I do not have a smart phone. I still have a Kirk to Enterprise
flip phone. My truck does have Bluetooth however, and I utilize
it for phone calls when I'm driving for the hands free aspect.
       Also for my MP3 player

       sticking out the top.
