every penny i make goes directly into our non-profit
sanctuary/rescue. come to think about it, a lot of what the doc
makes goes right back into our rescue as well... ive used the
gongs to bring public attention to our cause every time i play
or speak publicly. before the gongs, i gigged locally as a solo
act... guitar, banjo, flutes, etc... used local open mic gigs
to promote as well, always finding a way to slip in a plug for
the docs work or some anecdotal lead into a tune. the festival
gigs have been promising. my intention was to try to get
sponsored or funded through art grants and use the increased
exposure to fully fund the sanctuary. if you recall, last year
at love burn i was “business hippie” mode and kept a journal of
contacts... one was a major player in the burning man
promoters. he made offers, extended opportunity and just as
things got started, a truck driver running a stop sign changed
our world forever. i figured the opportunity was lost as well,
until i got a phone call a few months ago from the owner of doc
bronners soap... wondering if they sweetened the deal, would
i be interested in playing their little party again this year
and picking up where we left off, our talks about sponsorship
before the accident... it seems they are still interested? its
a shot i have to take.

You absolutely have to take the shot. I remember how pumped you
were about the possibilities of your art providing some
sustenance for your passion..The Shelter, the Wife's practice...
I hope the gig leads to what you are hoping for...You, you
Wife...The Critters you give so much love to..All deserve it :)

brother, no matter the result, an interesting journey is its own
reward. this shouldnt be too boring... i just rocked my wife,
the kids and the nanny with my regalia for the opening night
parade... last year i wore my simple white cotton kurta and
carried a white, naturally fluorescent stone orb about the size
of a large grapefruit and ended up riding the lead art car, a
fire breathing dragon (which i actually piloted the frickin’
head!!) instead of marching with my tribe, the butterfly
people... this year im with my tribe... simple black shaolin
style kung fu kimono/ robes with sleeves almost to my knees...
but underneath is a liner i fashioned from polyester costume
wings lit by hundreds of mini multi colored leds, it actually
looks as if im wearing the night sky with glittery, colored
stars... but the best is im wearing a 50 watt roland street
cube ex on my back and wailing on the futujara with full reverb,
digital delay and looper, (tc electronics,) and an ecs octabass
pedal... controlled by a baggs para eq and mic’d up with an old
shure sm 10 run thru a line transformer... i rarely need to
run past 7 on half power setting, even at larger drum circles...
all battery powered and i can get a good three evenings out of
a set of batteries, usually more.
