Picked the wrong weekend to go to Galveston...

....Due to Alberto, the current changes in the Gulf have
diverted the usual flood of nutrient rich, brown spillage from
the Mississippi river that drifts down to Galveston, giving it
the muddy appearance close to shore. For the last few days the
coast down here has been a glorious, beautifully clear and green
marvel of water. I had a service call in Galveston today and
went down to the beach at lunch and it was just an amazing
sight.
I mean, we're all used to the coast down there having a
somewhat muddy look, and that will return soon....But I wish the
water could have looked like that last weekend when we were all
down there. usually you have to get past Aransas pass to see
the Gulf that clear and beautiful close to shore.
Most people don't realize how beautiful the Gulf is. But you go
offshore a few miles and it's a spectacularly blue and clear
body of water. The times I've been offshore fishing, and I mean
20 miles or more offshore, I've spent as much time marveling at
the water as I have actually trying to catch fish.

I spent a couple of weeks in Galveston way back in Sept 1976.
My biggest memory is that they had the old classic corner bar in
the old part of the city. Something that I also saw in south
St. Louis about 20 years later. I'd never seen those in
Florida. I also remember the Galveston had a photo exhibit of
the massive hurricane that hit the city around 1905.

The 1900 storm is still the deadliest natural disaster in the
US. 6000-8000 killed. After that, the Seawall was built and the
island was essentially raised 10 ft behind it.
