Ebb and flow...

.....HC is a sinking ship methinks....Fewer and fewer posters
there. I was kind of enjoying Open Jam for the last little
while, but never really...well..never really got a jam going on
there exactly. there's been threads yanked, some with no real
explanation. A lot of cork sniffing as far as anything at all
political, even when it's only implied. used to be I stayed out
of Off Topic because you couldn't keep up with all the
threads...Now it's becoming a snorefest with only a few regular
posters. The censorship seems to be getting more pronounced as
well...
Even Craig's forum has become a Ghost Town......With Gibson's
financial troubles, I can't see why they'ed keep HC up and
running for much longer, no more traffic than it has.
I'd know few if any of you had it not been for HC either
directly or indirectly...So it's kind of sad in that respect.
I kind of wonder if Forums are really becoming
dinosaurs...Social media seems to be the thing now as far as
communication. Even with the obvious user abuse with Facebook,
that still seems to be the preferred platform...
Just ruminating.....

There are so many options for people these days. I generally
check out HC, Keyboard Corner, and Pianoworld forums. Keyboard
corner is very active and threads usually move fast. It's a
combination of synth guys who are into classic bands like Yes
and Emerson Lake and Palmer (in addition to things I'm not
familiar with), some jazz fans, and various misc. other things.
Pianoworld is all pianists with a Non-Classical catch-all for
the non Bach/Beethoven stuff. It sometimes moves slowly too.
My impression of HC is that the core members are tech savvy.
I've read it as a resource in that sense - learning some things
here and there from posts about technology. I feel out of step
musically with most people there. I don't post too often since
I don't have much to offer in technical matters. But I've only
frequented Craig's portion of the forum.
I hope HC doesn't dry up and blow away. But businesses do have
lifespans. Some don't adapt to new developments - Penney's and
Sears come to mind. I don't know what Gibson and (the infamous)
Henry what's his name did wrong. But I've noticed Henry get's a
lot of hate and criticism. A year or two back the AllAboutJazz
forum had the plug pulled. But it too was drying up,
participation wise. There are so many options for everything
these days.
I remember over the years invoking the "less is more" mantra.
When I was a teenager I had a hunger and searched out music.
Have little money I discovered thrift stores. There weren't many
in little Sanford Florida. But I could buy an old used vinyl
album for maybe $1 (maybe half a dollar). I remember listening
to Josh White - only because I found a used album for cheap. I
discovered some good music that way. Now YouTube has millions
of songs a click away.
There is sooo much available that sooo much gets lost in the
clutter. I never became a big Josh White fan. But it's nice
when one stumbles on music that excites and thrills.

ive had my fill of hc... i go through very reclusive
phases and living in the woods in north floridumb makes personal
contact of anything meaningful rare at best... being an
observer is part of my brain malfunction... according to the
makers of rules... and what i see disturbs me greatly.
deliberate misinformation distributed without restraint...
admired and applauded... the very darkest of the spectrum is
where we dine for our entertainment... the internet has become
a fertile garden of propaganda and people will believe the sky
is green if they are beaten over the head with it long enough...
the internet... a place originally devised for scientists to
share research and discovery now full of flat earthers and
hollow headed dullards straight out of “idiocracy”..
i tried other forums... i dont like censorship, but i dont care
for the stupidity that is passed as freedom in some places ive
tried... this place isnt fast... its not burning down the
airwaves... but its fucking real. i

I'm glad you hang here Dudley. You are one of the few "reals"
I've known over the sizzle wires. Dave,Dinks and Bieke as well.
Bieke's always spoken truth to the Powers over at HC and he
don't spare the mustard when he does if you know what I mean.
This little forum has distilled the memberlist down to a few
people that are wholly civil to each other. We've got a small
mix of good folks. I'm quite glad it's not fast to be truthful.
That may be a minus for some I guess.
Nobody here has an agenda as far as I can tell. It's just a
fellowship hall, and that's all I ever wanted it to be.
There is not, and never will be any censorship in here. Everyone
can say whatever they want about any subject they choose. We're
all adults here.

I'd never heard of Josh White before you posted this Dave. What
a unique talent! That was a really clean performance, of some
interesting material. Really organic, just a guitar, bass and
vocal. The time it was captured, 1962. I wonder if the guy had
to go to Sweden to find an media outlet for that particular
approach to music. He was playing a style of music that really
wouldn't fall into the pigeonholes set at the time for Black
Musicians in 'Murica at that time.
The guy was clearly urbane, educated. Completely in command of
the instrument and his voice. He wasn't pandering to any
particular social strata. He wasn't elucidating or flavoring his
vocals with any regionally skewed accents. No genre targets
apparent. The music seems to be really pure Americana, no real
dispensation towards either Blues, Jazz, Gospel or Country. All
those genres were where Black American music seemed to reside,
or at least, be confined to, at the time.
Helluva a great post...Including the link Dave...Kinda made my
Saturday.

HC has become irrelevant, they miss out on all the new gear,
their news section is out of touch, articles are biased, reviews
are boring, and the forums are what they are, a platform for
spammers and a handful of regulars that talk amongst themselves,
political forum seems to be the most active forum nowadays, so
for a music forum, that is not really a good indicator, search
doesn't work, software is buggy, Anderton (mostly absent
nowadays) wonders why the forums aren't getting more posts
because traffic is up, has been up month after month, he doesn't
seem to realize that it is all spammers, HC isn't even a secure
site, this attracts more spammers

That's all true Bieke. Craig updates his personal webpage more
than he posts at HC. I think he was more upset about getting
fired from Gibson than he let's on. He says he's happy that he
has time to pursue other interests now, and while I'm sure
that's true, it's never a good thing to lose a paycheck. For all
I know he's independently wealthy, I don't really know anything
about him. He's always been really kind to me and
encouraged...Even complimented my crappy tunes. I really like
him, and I hope good things come his way.
I really don't know what his job at Gibson was...Do you have a
clue? Oh well....I've been speculating that it's going to shut
down soon.
The amount of spam there is epic really. Seems to be worse all
the time. They seem to be slow on the review side of things. I
always thought the ones he and Phil did were really through
however. Most of the software reviews go over my head anyway.

I've been following HC for maybe 10-12 years. I don't know much
about Craig but I do remember at one point he mentioned having a
family member with some costly medical situation. I think that
was when he lived in New Mexico (IIRC). That's about all I
remember. I don't think he's wealthy. Of course I have no idea
what someone with his considerable set of skills can make in the
gigging market. And I mean gigging in the sense of mastering
projects, seminar appearances, technical manual writing and
whatever else.

hmmm, Craig's job at Gibson ? Nobody knows for sure, his job
title was EVP Evangelist " to spread the joy and fun of making
music" according to Gibson. Not long thereafter HC started with
the "Make Better Music" crap with Dendy Jarrett as the resident
HC evangelist/site admin. It has gone further downhill since.

As for Gibson, well, I think they will do something like Guitar
Center did last month, refinance their debt, hoping that the
coming years will bring stellar revenues, monetize what can be
monetized, the plan (it's not clear what the plan is) to focus
on consumer electronics and creating a lifestyle brand, I have
my doubts. We'll see. It all depends whether the current CEO
stays on or throws the towel.
As for Craig, well, I met him a couple of years ago at
Musikmesse, right after he took the Gibson job, genuine nice
guy, passionate, smart, smooth talker. While at Gibson, he was
creating some content for the Gibson site, writing technical
articles, he also tried to create content for Sonar, sound
libraries as well. I get the impression he is trying to reinvent
himself. His skills are writing and editing, has a vast amount
of technical expertise, but in a field that is constantly
changing, I think he is a bit lost at the moment, trying to jump
the EDM bandwagon, trying to keep up with the latest
technologies. His music production skills are pretty mediocre
imo. Anyway, he is now doing some consulting and writing for
SoS, ProSoundNetwork, he is going to publish a series of
homerecording books, he's still doing lectures, he opened up a
Reverb store to sell his eBooks and sound libraries. He even set
up a iTunes store to sell his music. I don't like it, it's s
mediocre Midi Elevator Muzak. Oops, I did it again.

I thought he'd been into EDM for quite sometime. I thought his
last album, "Simplicity" was really good. Pure pop music. He
does seem to be extremely gifted on the technical side of
things. I bought a few of his books and built some of the
projects in them. He's certainly a smart dude, and I'm sure
he'll succeed in whatever he does. I've followed his work for so
long, I have great respect for him and I'll admit a bit of hero
worship.
You don't have to sweat the elevator music stuff. Bucky left the
forum.
I never took barrage at the elevator music label you put on
"Clair". It was Bucky's tune. I just made it cooler with my
tabla loops and killer guitar feedback swells.
I made it Cool Elevator music. ;)
