Bastard of a day
By: AJ Date: July 6, 2017, 7:40 pm
---------------------------------------------------------
..Started out with a 3:30 a.m call for emergency service.
Apparently the Night manager didn't check temps before he left
and the entire medium temp rack was down. So all the meat,
produce and dairy departments had been down since God knows
when. A 2 1/8" discharge line had cracked under a clamp and 1200
pounds of R-404a had left the building for the ozone layer...Oil
was everywhere. So I had to police the area before I could refit
the line and drag my brazing rig up there. Clean up, refit and
welding all took about 2 hours...Then I had to hump the 300 lb.s
of gas up the stairs, call my back up guy 6:00 a.m. and tell him
to come a runnin' with what he had on his truck. I emptied my
drums into the rack and loaded up my empties, just as he pulled
up. He started humping his up and I went running to the shop
and loaded a little over 1000lbs into the truck. By 10:30, the
rack was full of gas and we pumped 2 gallons of polyester oil
into the oil reservoir. I noticed the reservoir emptied pretty
quick but wasn't getting oil back...The separator float was
stuck. So...2 more hours evacuating the high side of the rack so
I could tear the separator down and replace the float, then
recharge the separator with oil. 12:30 the rack is working well,
temps are down...Everywhere but the mechanical room I'd been
working in since 4 am...See the exhaust fan was on the
fritz....So, two more hours dealing with that...So at least the
next guy won't have to swelter...at least as much as me and my
guy did. Finally grab a couple of tacos about 3..Then run one
more call...2 20 ton a/c's...Both on the roof...Both out of gas.
Find and fix the leaks...Pull out about 6....Then the a/c in my
truck takes a shit....Hot ride home...
Sucks to be me sometimes.

Whoh, man. That does suck.
I never had a knack for technical stuff. Outside of my books, I
generally feel idiotic in most work situations. Ironically,
everyone at my new job thinks I'm doing a great job.
Thank God for guys like you who know what they're doing. If you
make bank doing it, that's even better, because guys who are
willing to repair the machines we take for granted deserve it.

Does this work come under the heading of HVAC ? And what is
polyester oil ?
On a road trip a couple of years back driving south around
Tallahasee I heard a radio interview about job/career paths
that are in big demand going forward. HVAC was one of those.

Damn AJ..that was a bastard AND a bitch of a day..
kinda sadly ironic that your own AC would putz out on you during
the ride home.
Were you still pulling the double time and a 1/2 for this gig?
hope so.
'Can't nobody say you don't earn yer ducats. :)

Thanks Bucky for the kind words,There is little to no
appreciation for the people that keep the machines running in
this world...Good to know young fellas like you appreciate what
we grease monkeys do.
Generally Dave, the field is considered HVAC/R.
Heating,Ventilation,Air Conditioning and Refrigeration. 90% of
what I do everyday is R. Commercial Refrigeration. Anytime you
walk into your Grocer's...There is nothing there that contains
cold merchandise that I do not deal with.
The display cases are just half of the story though, the
machinery that refrigerates those cases is generally in a remote
motor room, with the heat transfer end of things generally on a
roof.
I was pulling double and a half on the 4th Luke, but at night
it's just time and a half.
My truck a/c is still out, and I think I've got electrical
issues. Gonna Google the symptoms this weekend and deal with it
Monday...When I can get paid to do it. Don't need the truck this
weekend..My two week tour is over for three weeks now....Time to
rest and play.

AJ..I think I did put it in the 'Sticky' thats why I couldnt
find it.. my bad..I found it and removed it..It didn't really
belong there..Just wanted to give peeps a 'heads up' about marks
site..
If you went there, you will see I told him I hope his new site
will last and he won't bolt on his members..he's got some
guests from HC stopping by..but as of last night Gringostarr was
the sole member...
It is a rather clean format..
anyway, the message about his new site is now out.
now, as you say...back to our regularly scheduled program.. :)
So..you never answered; is there a chance of retirement for you
in the future?

Well yeah the is a chance, but the hangup is healthcare for the
wife. She's unemployed so she's on my insurance at work. So
while I could go on Medicare full nelson, she can't for 4 more
years, hence I must toil 'till then. When she can get on
Medicare parts A-Z then I can hang it up and live a subsistence
existence . Lol. I should have all my debt retired a little
before then...I hope.Ran up significant debt during her long
illness..Which is ongoing to an extent...We've discussed the
particulars about that before...
