Re: Regrets, I've had a few

First electric guitar I ever layed hands on was a lap
steel.....I'd just started learning how to play acoustic guitar
and befriended a new kid to school. Went over to his house after
school and his Dad's lap steel was in the living room. The kid's
name was Steve and I remember his Mom being real friendly. I
asked what the instrument was and Steve saying it was his Dad's
Hawaiian guitar. He handed it to me and I told him I had no idea
how it worked. I remember a Fender amp...Probably a Princeton or
a Deluxe.
I also remember his Mom saying "Steve's Daddy kind of wears us
out with it".
I did finally get to hear his Dad playing it, but I couldn't
tell you what he played....But it was LOUD.

I want to try and find the documentary segment on Hawaiian
music. I'll try and look for it. I think it's in the American
Epic series. I'm a sucker for little side currents in our
musical culture.

A quick search on YouTube gave me this. This excerpt is only 3
minutes.

This is a brief history of Hawaiin guitar by Bob Brozman. Not
what I was looking to find but it is interesting.

"You won't find a Mexican without a guitar", Interesting, if
racist.
Literally...I had no idea...That the Delta slide tradition
sprung from the Isles of the Pacific...
Great posts Dave and Bieke...Informative, educational.
Kudos to both of you!

Bill Brozman was quite a guitar historian. I'd happily pay the
current concert ticket price to see him. He died in 2013.
The cultural migration of musical "devices" (whatever one would
call them) like the guitar, slide, and yodel are indeed
curious and fascinating. Listening to Robert Johnson, you can
hear the yodel influence in his singing.
