I enjoy a good lap steel player. I saw a guy who calls himself
Watermelon Slim in Clarksdale Mississippi a couple years back.
I toyed with the idea of getting a lap steel for a short time
       after.
I think lap steel may have some unexplored possibilities. Of
course I guess a pedal steel has even more potential for
       exploration.

Pedal steel is a way more exciting possibility to me. A lap
steel isn't totally dissimilar to tuning a regular guitar to
open tunings and laying it on your lap.
Pedal steels you can mechanically raise or lower the pitch of a
string/strings. I've never even tried one but I'd sure like to
take one for a test drive sometime. Like any instrument, I
suspect it takes quite a bit of work to achieve even passable
       results.

This is the guy I saw in Clarksdale Mississippi a coupla years
back. He was very entertaining. Had a band with a stage act. I
       think he's just practicing here.

I don't know exactly how a pedal steel works. I think the
pedals change it's open tuning and the player is manipulating
the pedals as needed. I'm sure there are YouTube videos showing
       this in excruciating detail.
The player in this video is Paul Franklin. I played with him
for maybe a week circa 1978. Nice guy. He told me if I came to
Nashville he'd help me find some gigs. Always sort of regretted
       that I didn't try that.

one doesn’t actually play a pedal steel guitar... more so one
must truly strap themself in and fly the damned thing. your
       mileage may vary...

my grandfather played hawaiian lap steel guitar in a “party
band” during the prohibition in the states... (he was from
quebec and made runs regularly to beavertown ohio for some odd
reason) needless, the first guitar i ever held was an early 50’s
gibson korina “flying V” hawaiian lap steel.... i was on the
road playing drums when my grandfather passed... a cousin, god
bless his little inbred heart, sold my grandfathers guitar for
       beer money before the funeral...
