I've been playing more acoustic than electric for the past two
years. It fills up space in a way that doesn't require reverb or
delay. I don't obsess over tone, but I do like playing with it.
My default tone is a fuzz of some sort with a cranked amp model,
but I rarely record with the amp and effects I have on my
Digitech without tinkering with reverb or something.
Robert Fripp said that guitar is a fickle instrument, and I
spent a long time trying to expand it as he did, but the
acoustic guitar cuts out all the ego and tone obsession. It's
       about pure expression.

yeah...The acoustic leaves us kind of naked doesn't it? One can
get away with a lot in a wash of reverbs and delays..(The Edge).
I've got modeling amps envy...I want one of some sort...I've
seriously been considering a couple of relatively low cost
models. The Marshall Code series...Boss Katana..Even the Line 6
Pod HX 500..Although it isn't a amp, but a floor unit. Only has
30 amp models but they are tweakable. The Marshall has clean
models, but all the models are Marshall so that would be
       limiting.

Wish I could sell you my Marshall. I don't use the damned thing.
About the Edge... I have never heard a U2 song that warranted
the "too many effects" label. I only hear that complaint from
guitarists too. I like the early stuff like October and War. The
Joshua Tree isn't bad, but it's not mind blowing.
Adrian Belew used to have a rack he referred to as the
refrigerator that was stuffed with Electro Harmonix and MXR
stomp boxes. His amp was a Roland JC-120, and he kept a flanger
on a stand so he could make weird noises onstage. He was
supposed to be the yin to Fripp's yang. He had experience
playing funky stuff with Talking Heads, Bowie, and Zappa, and
Fripp was more studied and in the background. They're both
accused of using too many effects despite not being Blues/Rock
musicians and obviously have chops to play almost any genre.
Fripp in particular is an accomplished Jazz guitarist, which you
hear more on the early Crimson stuff. Back then, it was fuzz, a
Hiwatt, and a wah. He made it sound like Death chasing you
       through a dark forest.
Hendrix would probably not be a purist as so many of his fans
are. Jimmy Page has wrecked a few Les Pauls with experimental
mods. Eddie Van Halen rendered guitars useless with all of his
       experiments.
And I think Richard Thompson can wipe the floor with them on an
       acoustic.

I think Adrian is one of my favorite guitarists ever. he has a
penchant for Parker Fly model guitars which are equipped with
       Hex pickups....
Still...my absolute favorite album is "Inner Revoulution". Which
is really an attempt at a rocked up pop album. Great songs
throughout and not a lot of soloing.
