The REAL breakout star at Monterrey....

Ravi Shankar...
Along with Alla Rakah on Tabla
Kamala Chakravarty on Tambura
...The argument could be made for this being the first wide
spread exposure for Live performance Indian music in the USA.
This entire piece of film is mesmerizing in it's scope..All of
it accompanied by Ravi and friends exquisite music.
The piece is a cross section of the humanity present, being
exposed to this hypnotic, enchanting soundscape.
The mesmerized, the becoming enlightened, the disinterested, the
too high too grasp the energy, the too high to disseminate what
was being put down, the intrigued, the wounded finding escape
and solace for a brief time, the lost, grasping for a hand hold,
the shallow, trying to behave as if they understand...The
knowing...just reveling in the sheer beauty..The knowing...just
soaking it in with eyes closed and appreciating it's
depth...Realization that the moment of witness is not only
enough, but a blessing.
The ever present drone of Kamala..The truly unbelievable
precision and passion of Alla..And the Masterly, transcendent
playing of Ravi ...
Jimi, The Who...They were great to be sure....But Ravi and crew
stole the show in my mind and ears...And have from the moment I
saw this so many decades ago..

IIRC, Moby Grape could've performed at the Monterey Festivel.
Their manager (as I read it) wouldn't allow it. I think he was
holding out for more money. The exposure would've been worth
much more than any fee they'd have received. Matthew Katz put
Moby Grape together and kept them fed while they rehearsed for
their big splash. Soon after their big spash, they partially
self-destructed.
There's some story about Captain Beefheart and the Magic Band
turning down a Monterey performance. Ry Cooder tells it that
Beefheart had a panic attack and did a belly flop of the back of
the stage. Ry quit the band, worried that he'd hobble his young
career working with (the crazyish?) Beefheart. I've been
watching some YT videos about Beefheart. There are extended
interviews with Bill Harkelroad (Zoot Horn Rollo) and John
French (Drumbo). Both are interviewed separately by a
conservatory trained composer named Samuel Andreyev. Amazing
stuff.
