roland cube street ex

picked one up for the fujara... the really quiet overtone
contra bass flute... i have it mic'ed up with an akg headset
element attached to the head of the flute, running into an akg
wireless mic system that sounds much better than the old shure
sm10 element... ( which would be easier without the extra
cordless stuff.) for gits and shiggles i ran everything through
an octa bass pedal for some really stupidly lush lows... a
nice helping of reverb and way too much delay and its an
intergalactic siberian shepherds flute! the roland has a decent
reverb, and the delay is perfect for my intentions... its not
super controllable but for a simple grab and go, battery powered
option amplifier, its pretty cool... it has 8 AA batteries in
the batt pack, and a laptop style power cord... supposed to get
phenomenal battery life so synchronize your watches i just put
in a fresh set of duracells. ( ive noticed no difference in the
sound so far between batteries and wall power) i may actually
dust off an electric or two and maybe plug in a real mic and
uncase an acoustic... but tonight im headed to a sound healers
circle... they expect gongs and bowls but tonight is flutes
and hang... i ought to try micing the hang with this thing,,,,
hmmmmm... i have a couple electret condensers and some
goosenecks...

im impressed! ran the roland on battery power all night and it
performed quite well... i was a couple hours early so i went
to the local guitar center and picked up a senn lav wireless mic
system to replace my old akg uhf unit that only works if you
hold the wire between your teeth while standing in a water
puddle... it was time.
the roland kept up with 12 people playing various gongs djembes.
frame drums, didges, and even a trombone! it was set on the mid
level wattage 20? ( i should read the manual) and volume was
about 1/4 or less. i had a tough time determining if what i was
hearing was feedback developing or gongs and singing bowls going
off... a little of both at times, im sure... mic and speaker
placement... the fujara was able to be heard over all of it and
allowed me to blend or stand out pretty much by breath control
alone... no, it isnt the qsc pa with the yorkville subs thats
siting in the trailer... but i can pick it up with one hand,
sling the goodies bag over my shoulder and carry everything in
one trip if im just playing the fujara...

Glad it worked out for you! Sounds like you gotta game plan, or
at least a good jump off point to experiment more!

Further thoughts...You maybe breaking some new ground? I
mean..Are you logging what you do insofar as setups and the like
when you are recording these things?
I don't know...I'm just thinking there perhaps aren't many
people doing what you do, and what knowledge you glean from what
works well and what does not might prove valuable to others down
the road.

i guess i pissed them off at hc sound forum... i asked the
experts and got one guess... lol, oh well... gongs are like
micing up a piano... sounds easier than it is... anyhow, the
futujara, contrabass flute with key change capabilities, made it
to jacksonville yesterday and should be on its way here!

I saw your post there. I didn't think you were out of line at
all. There are people in all those forums that have a lot of
knowledge...And some that are just blowing a lot of smoke. That
goes for most forums I've been to however.
Obviously, those people weren't aware of the Veracity of Voltan.
One must respect the Voltan. When the Benevolent one makes an
inquiry, one should not respond unless they have a pure and
proven truth to reveal.
No illicit substances were involved in the composition of this
post.

Well yeah, me too. About the lack of illicit substance thing. I
imbibed in herbal essence for over twenty years...Daily, and
Nightly. Then the Wee Lad entered my life and I put it aside for
all the obvious reasons.
I don't miss "The Hunt" for it at all..The paranoia involved in
procurement and transport...Remember, I live in Texas. But man I
do miss the vibe and tranquility it produced for me.
Your quest to record your musical experience is of great
interest to me, and I think Bucky as well. I love nuts and bolts
conversations about recording and tonal pursuits. I feel really
comfortable with all here.
