Gram Parsons was a surprise, albeit a pleasant one. Never heard
of Nahko Bear...Guessing this is an Native American artist? No.
none of the rest surprised me though...It's obvious through
conversation with you that like myself..You've accumulated
influence from a variety of sources..

I like Michael McDonald era Doobie Brothers. Some people aren't
surprised by my love of old Japanese electronic stuff like
Yellow Magic Orchestra, but I like their Pop relatives too like
Akiko Yano and Yukihiro Takahashi. I have a lot of Boz Scaggs in
       my collection too.
All of my musician friends don't know why I love Kanye West,
either. I'm also a big fan of George Strait and Alan Jackson.
There's a Strait song on the cover album I'm working on.

good music is just good music... to my silly way of looking at
things, genre is just what flavor you decided to throw into the
jambalaya.. what you have on hand and what direction your
imagination leads at that moment... could be thai tomorrow
night, youll have to come and see...

Hell Boz was great! I also liked the Doobie Brothers through the
seventies. The McDonald era, Skunk Baxter. Great stuff. Micheal
pushed the band in a jazzier direction. I liked the pre Mac era
       stuff by them as well.
I am a bit surprised about the Strait thing, but not Jackson, I
       like his stuff too.
Not Kanye however, but to be fair I haven't spent any real time
listening to him, or that genre really.

I consider Kanye a genius in the same vein as Brian Wilson. His
popular image is a fraud, because he’s from a much different
background than his fellow Hip Hop stars. Even the stuff he
samples, King Crimson to Steely Dan to Labi Siffre, is a lot
different. I like NWA, 2Chainz, and Kendrick Lamar, but none of
them are like Kanye. The way he juxtaposes the subject matter of
his past with the typical Hip Hop trends along with brilliant
       music/production has never been touched.

I'll take your word for it. There is a lot of musical territory
I'm unfamiliar with and I suppose I'm a bit of a Luddite in that
respect. I know Kanye has had an impact however. I have heard
his stuff, and seen him perform on TV...It just doesn't do
       anything for me.
When sampling first became a thing, I thought it was pretty cool
insofar as you could take samples of instruments, and play them
on a keyboard. But soon after, people started sampling pieces of
other peoples songs and making "Music" with them.
I thought it was lazy frankly, even though I realize it's taken
on a life of it's own, and indeed become just another form of
expression. I still think it's allowing people with no
particular musical discipline to make a living at music without
the hard work of actually learning an instrument.
Of course I realize this opens the argument that sampling itself
has become an instrument, that the cutting and pasting involves
time and skill. That the production values are to be respected.
I guess the sales reflect that to be a viable argument.
This whole stream perhaps would make an interesting thread unto
       itself......
