Cakewalk/Sonar shut down by Gibson brands..
By: AJ Date: November 23, 2017, 7:07 pm
---------------------------------------------------------
Gibson Brands Inc. has shut down development and support for
Cakewalk/Sonar DAW products line.
HTML http://www.cakewalk.com/Gibson-Announcement
HTML http://www.cakewalk.com/Gibson-Announcement
Gibson also owns Harmony Central.com, so given Gibson's deep and
debt ridden financial woes, I'm thinking that HC cannot be far
from the Headsman's axe as well.
Depends on who you talk to of course, but HC has had a long , if
checkered run. If it goes by the wayside it won't affect the
price of eggs...But I wouldn't know any of you had it not been
for that place. So for that reason I guess I'll be sorry to see
it go. There are people there I'd miss..Craig Anderton for
one...Although I reckon he'll still keep up a web presence
elsewhere. he's a people person. Many others as well.
There are also many more I decidedly will not miss at all.
I've been using Sonar for about a year...But am still struggling
with it...So maybe I'll switch to another platform. The good
thing is that I have the subscription version of it, and they
said all versions of the program will continue to operate...So
maybe a plus...I can save the $50 to renew and continue to learn
a dying platform...Lol.
or maybe dig into the Abelton Lite program that came with my
Scarlett interface.....
One door closes, another opens...

I was shocked when I read about Cakewalk Sonar. I sincerely
hope HC doesn't go belly up. There was also a lot of discussion
over on the Keyboard Corner forum about Cakewalk's news. Some
of them were pretty critical of Gibson since Henry Juszkiewicz
has run things. I really have no idea of who or what's at
fault.
I was prepared to by a Scarlett interface. Then I read some
things about the software that it comes with, Pro Tools First.
I read that you cannot convert to an mp3 to share with someone.
I also read that you can only store your recordings in the
cloud. NOT on your own hard drive or flash drive. Now I'm
looking at the Presonus Studio 26 which comes with their Studio
One Artist version of their DAW. Thinking of buying it.
I really hope HC stays around. There are some really savvy,
smart people over there. I'm not very technical, but I pick up
tips here and there about what's going on. I don't really like
Gearslutz that much. Seems like they're more like a bunch of
guys who are into equipment more than music. I do like the
Keyboard Corner forum, but it's pretty much just about keyboards
(what else would it be ?).

I would love for Phil O’Keefe and Dendy Jarrett to be out of a
job.
Gibson keeps taking left turns. Pretty soon, they’re going to
drive off a cliff.

Understand your beef with Phil, but didn't know you had problems
with Dendy as well. Can't say I've ever interacted with him at
all. I know a former forum member had issues with Dendy, but
unsure why.
I'll miss Craig, that's for sure. Since he is no longer with
Gibson, and Gibson owns HC, I doubt he's still Executive Editor.
But then I doubt HC is going to be around much longer anyway.
Oh well....I'll keep this place open fellas....... O0

I checked out Presonus as well. The pricing seems to be about
the same with these DAW's. An introductory level program for
$99, a more better version for $299 or so, then all the bells
and whistles for $4-500. I know that the last album Mark
Longworth came out with was completely done within Presonus, all
the instruments were digital. Not my cup of tea really....
I've heard good things about Reaper, which is a open source DAW.
Dinkleberg has been using it for years. I tried the introductory
level(Free) version but couldn't really get a handle on it until
the trial was over. I think it's $60.

I don't know much about Presonus Studio One, but have read it's
somewhat intuitive. And that it has drag and drop features.
One person called Pro Tools First crippleware. I just despise
it when they play the "gotcha" game. Not Pro Tools specifically,
just any company in general.

That rule pretty much applies to most "Entry Level" software.

Dendy was the mod I had the most contact with about Knotty and
Dave, and he all but told me to fuck off. He did say that he and
Phil spoke about the situation on the phone, which proves Phil
is not only a liar because he later denied knowing anything
about, but also a piece of shit. He’d rather let people
violently admonish and bully each other than ban them before it
gets out of hand. Phil is a cowardly shill for whatever
corporation owns him be it Gibson or whoever funds HC next.

That's enough for me Bucky...Fuck 'em both then.....
No guarantee ANYONE will fund HC however....Whether it realizes
it or not, the writing on the wall is there for HC. It exists on
gasps of air and sips of hope. Without Gibson's underwriting,
there is no there there.
If Craig finds a new home, I'll absolutely check in with
him..I've already reached out to him on his website..He's
quality people, and has been kind to me, despite my complete
lack of impact on anything musical. Much like you guys have
befriended me...I don't forget kindnesses.

And I get that. But my impression has been that the upgraded
versions of DAWs allow 128 track recording or something like
that. I don't forsee using a half a bizillion effects plugins,
no artificial drums, MIDI instruments etc. I do want to do
something BitchesBrew-ambient inspired. But my impression is
that most of the HC guys want to replicate a "band" - with bass
and drums. I say "why" ? Who says it has to recreate a rock &
roll band if there's not one there ?
I'm used to being an outlier much of my life. I was bullied
circa 1969 in Central Florida for growing long hair. The good
ole boys didn't like people with hippie-hair (my term). I
observed many years later the younger crop of good ole boys
grew their hair long. It's a goofy world.
But back to limitations, I think Pro Tools limitations are
beyond reason. Not allowing someone to "cut" mp3 files and not
allowing them to store their work on their own hard drives ?
