       What's up with Thanksgiving?
By: AJ Date: November 18, 2017, 6:41 pm

..I'm on call this Thanksgiving so the Wife and The Lad will be
trekking to Rosharon to Sis's house without me. I'll be baking
some pies and making a dish to them to take with them and my
wife will crank out a big plate of her deviled eggs as well.
I'll miss not going. I don't see my Sister and Brother-in-Law
all that much. Also want to see my Brother and his Fam, but I
see them pretty regular as they live a lot closer.
My Brother's oldest son went into the Air Force in August and is
stationed in California now, and his younger son just enlisted
in the Army, so it may be a while before I see him at the table
as well. I'll miss the fare as well...Sis is a good cook and
       turns out a fine bird.
What do you guys generally do for T-Day?

I'm headed for just south of Asheville NC. Fletcher. My
sister's house. There'll be some family and friends at the big
dinner. Maybe some walking around downtown Asheville. It has
some nice classic architecture that over time has survived the
wrecking ball. Possibly a bit of live music. I'll be taking
my Yamaha Reface CP so I'll have something to play.

My Wife and I went to Biltmore a long time ago. The Estate was
really something else. The land that held it was even more
       beautiful.
The Grandeur of that Estate was an eye opener on the excess
enjoyed by the select few of the Mega Wealthy of the times.
There was no income taxes levied at the time, so the Captains of
Industry had plenty of money to spoil themselves and their
families with. I saw many more examples of this when we toured
the Cliff Walk area in Rhode Island, where magnificent mansion
after magnificent mansion lined the shores. All those homes were
built in around the same time period. One, the Breakers, was
built by Cornelius Vanderbilt, as his summer home. Cornelius,
the railroading tycoon, was George Vanderbilt's, who constructed
       Biltmore, Dad I think?
The "Tax Reform" touted by Paul Ryan and Donald Trump...Will
shovel more money in to the pockets of modern day Vanderbilt
       types...And out of our pockets.
Sorry...I meant to simply note I'd been to Asheville and
Biltmore, and had found it to be incredibly beautiful country.
Have a great time there Dave, and travel safely...

Yeah, those 1900ish Gilded Age folks were ostentatious to say
the least. Last time I was in Asheville my sister treated me to
a "behind the scenes" tour for annual pass holders. It showed
where the hired help slept. And ate. Here in Florida, our big
deal mogul builder was Henry Flagler. He built some fantastic
structures in St. Augustine. One church (the church of Flagler's
religion) he had artisans and laborers working 24 hours in
shifts to complete it sooner. I think his and his daughter's
remains are in tombs in a side chamber of the church.
Flagler brought the railroad line down the east coast of
Florida. Built 2 large hotels in St. Augustine. One houses a
college (Flagler College) and one houses some city government
offices. Both have some public museum space.
I love the history he left us. I'm sure he probably exploited
poor workers on his way to becoming wealthy. The term often
used for these Gilded Age magnates is "robber barons".

I think St.Augustine is considered the oldest city in America
isn't it? Didn't Ponce de Leon take a dump there or something?
I haven't been there but it's on my bucket list.
Also going back to Tampa and finding another Cuban sandwich shop
like the ones we went to in my youth. My folks had childhood
friends they stayed close with and we'd go see them every couple
of years. I remember the Cuban sandwiches...And fishing. And
       Church....LOTS of church.

My wife and I are going to my mother's house to cook lunch, and
we'll be driving to Alabama for her grandmother's dinner.
Last year wasn't fun, as I recall. I had a job that required me
to wake up around 4 AM and come in a 5 AM. I got off at 1:30,
but went to be anywhere from 6 to 8. The nights I stayed up past
10 meant I'd wake up not only tired as hell, my job was so
physically demanding that I was dead by the end of the day. So,
both Thanksgiving and Christmas were bad memories. I had to work
on Christmas and come into work the next day too. A lot of that
was due to high turnover and our under staffed department. My
supervisor always lingered after a new person quit (usually
within their first month!), and it'd be another month before we
replaced them. I was the only man on my shift, so I'd do all the
       heavy lifting and grunt work.
Now I have a desk job, get paid holidays, and make twice as
much. It's not a lot, and certainly not with my useless degree.
But I'll enjoy this year so much better than last year's
       Thanksgiving.

im flying a friend in for a week... a navajo elder i met at
red stone camp while i was at standing rock. his birthday is
thanksgiving and he wanted to see the gulf before it gets
ruined... usually its a big day for my mom, but she is having
some tough times with parkinsons and other issues. im thinking
of taking my friend out for dinner to an indian restaurant
(curry indian) so as not to be extra work for mom, and
thanksgiving as a celebration is kind of a slap in the nuts for
the native community from my perspective... i usually dont eat
       on that day.

I think the Holiday has sort of morphed in to some thing
different really. Nobody in my family brings up Pilgrims or
Native Americans that day. While I can see where it would be a
righteous point of contempt for those whose family trees are
rooted in the Americas prior to 1492, I think the majority in
this country don't even associate it with Pilgrims or Genocide
anymore. It's just a day to pig out, to come together with
family and friends, a day off work.
It was well over two hundred years after the Fabled repast
between the Pilgrims and Locals that Abraham Lincoln fixed a
date to observe a National Day of Thanksgiving.

aj... the first thanksgiving was a massacre of over 500 men
women and children... historical records are abundant and show
where mercenaries were hired by the governor of the
commonwealth. its a travesty that we dont teach the truth and
we perpetuate lies as honesty... its a huge part of whats wrong
with our people today, imho. example, the trail of tears, a
forced death march, is now shown in textbooks as a willing
movement of indigenypeople to make room for the new settlers?
fuck me running with a chainsaw, please... we will never evolve
until we recognize our mistakes as being such. we are capable
       of being so much more.

I don’t know anyone who thinks the Trail of Tears was voluntary.
I’m 26, but learned about what we did to the Indians early on in
elementary school and again in high school. I know some people
who think Andrew Jackson was akin to Hitler.
